It’s really about enhancing efficiency, stimulating reader engagement, and personalizing their reading experience. These, in turn, translate into more organic traffic, higher reader retention, and ultimately, a successful blog.

Enhancing Blog Writing with AI

From content generation to keyword research and optimization, AI has the power to revolutionize your blog writing. AI-powered content generation tools, like Jarvis, Articoolo, and Quillbot, can help bloggers conquer writer’s block, maintain consistency, and optimize their content. How? By offering ideas, crafting compelling headlines, and even drafting entire articles. These tools rely on machine learning algorithms to understand context, improve language use, and generate human-like text that’s both engaging and SEO-friendly.

But that’s not all. AI also extends its help in keyword research and optimization. Tools such as Twinword, MarketMuse, or Frase make keyword research and content optimization a breeze. They predict keyword performance, suggest long-tail keywords, and even analyze your competitors’ keyword strategy, thereby boosting your visibility on search engine results.

The Washington Post utilized its in-house AI technology, Heliograf, to generate short reports on the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2016 US elections. This case study demonstrates the potential of AI in content generation. You can read more about it in the Washington Post’s official announcement.

AI in SEO

AI can also help with SEO which is all about making your website easy to find when people search for topics related to what you offer. For example, some AI tools can analyze your content and suggest improvements to help you rank higher in search engine results.

AI can help with SEO in several ways:

  1. Keyword Optimization: AI tools like CanIRank can suggest the best keywords to use in your articles. These are the words or phrases people might type into a search engine when looking for the information you provide.
  2. Readability Improvement: AI can also check if your article is easy to read. Tools like Grammarly or Hemingway Editor can suggest simpler words or sentences to make sure your readers understand your content.
  3. Backlink Analysis: Backlinks are when other websites link to your website. They’re important for SEO because they show search engines that your website is a trusted source of information. AI tools like BrightEdge can analyze your backlinks and suggest ways to get more high-quality links.
  4. SEO Trend Prediction: AI can look at patterns and trends in SEO to predict what might become important in the future. Tools like Market Brew can help you stay ahead and make changes to your website before your competitors do.

AI is revolutionizing various aspects of SEO, including keyword research, content optimization, and user experience. Forbes did an in-depth look into this topic here.

AI in Content Curation

AI can also assist with content curation by finding relevant content based on your chosen topics. AI tools like Anders Pink or DrumUp automate the process of content aggregation, using machine learning to comprehend your content themes and preferences, and compile the most relevant content from the web. There’s more. Tools like Curata and Scoop.it! enable you to discover, curate, and share content on your blog, helping you stay relevant and offer consistent value to your readers.

With the help of AI algorithms, OneSpot or Dynamic Yield can provide personalized content recommendations to your readers based on their behavior and preferences. As you can guess, providing tailored content to readers enhances their engagement and makes them feel valued, improving their overall experience on your blog.

For example, the New York Times uses its AI tool, Blossom, to curate content on its social media platforms. Blossom predicts how articles will perform on social platforms and helps the New York Times decide what to post.

The role of AI isn’t limited to content creation and curation. AI and machine learning are used in editing and proofreading tools to improve the quality of written content. AI-powered editing tools like Grammarly or ProWritingAid come to the rescue to catch grammar and spelling errors, suggest better phrasing, and even improve the readability of your text. The result is polished, professional content that readers enjoy.

Additionally, AI can analyze your writing and offer suggestions to refine your style and tone. Achieving this consistency becomes more manageable and less time-consuming, building your brand’s voice and maintaining reader trust.

AI-Powered Chatbots and Blog Engagement

Integrating AI-powered chatbots can be a game-changer in enhancing user experience and fostering a sense of community around your blog. These chatbots engage readers by providing instant responses, personalized suggestions, and interactive conversations. This engagement encourages readers to spend more time on your blog and return for future visits.

In the age of endless possibilities and boundless connectivity, the allure of the digital nomad lifestyle has never been stronger.

Picture this: waking up to the gentle hum of waves crashing on a sun-kissed beach, sipping your morning coffee while taking in a breathtaking view of mountains, or finding inspiration in a bustling café in a vibrant city halfway across the world.

Sounds fascinating. Right? Welcome to the world of “digital nomadism”, where freedom, adventure, and the flexibility to work from anywhere converge into an exhilarating way of life.

But wait… this isn’t as easy as it sounds.

I mean being a digital nomad isn’t trading cubicles for co-working spaces or swapping boardrooms for beachfront cabanas. It’s about embracing a lifestyle that transcends boundaries, challenges conventions, and taps into the essence of what it means to be truly alive.

Embracing the digital nomad lifestyle also requires safeguarding your future, including considering life insurance that you can quickly buy online. This can provide flexible, quick protection for nomads, ensuring financial security for loved ones no matter where in the world you might be. Here are some essential steps to simplify your life as a digital nomad:

Consolidate your accounts, automate bill payments, and embrace digital banking solutions to manage your finances efficiently. Consider using budgeting apps or spreadsheets to track your expenses and savings.

By simplifying your lifestyle, you create more space for meaningful experiences, personal growth, and the pursuit of your passions. Embracing minimalism as a digital nomad allows you to focus on what truly matters while shedding the distractions and burdens of excessive material possessions.

5. Budgeting and Saving

One of the most important aspects of transitioning to a digital nomad lifestyle is effectively managing your finances. Budgeting and saving play a crucial role in ensuring the sustainability of your location-independent journey.

By implementing smart financial strategies, you can maintain a healthy financial foundation, cover your expenses, and enjoy the freedom and flexibility that being a digital nomad offers.

Here is what you need to know about budgeting and saving to live a healthy and sustainable digital nomad lifestyle.

Determine Your Expenses

The first step in effective budgeting is understanding and categorizing your expenses. As a digital nomad, your expenses will include accommodation, transportation, food, healthcare, communication, and other miscellaneous costs.

Take time to analyze your spending habits and identify areas where you can cut back or adjust. It’s important to consider both fixed expenses (such as rent or mortgage payments) and variable expenses (such as dining out or leisure activities).

You can also utilize these budgeting apps in case you aren’t a fan of making spreadsheets in Excel.

Set Realistic Income Goals

Before you embark on your digital nomad journey, it’s essential to have a realistic understanding of your income potential. Assess your remote job or freelance opportunities and determine your expected monthly income. Take into account any fluctuations in income due to seasonality or project-based work so you can align your budget.

Automate Your Savings

Saving money should be a top priority as a digital nomad. Automating your savings can help you stay consistent and disciplined. Set up automatic transfers from your checking account to a separate savings account or investment vehicle. This way, a portion of your income will be saved without you having to remember to do it manually. Treat your savings as a non-negotiable expense and prioritize it alongside your other financial commitments.

Seek Cost-Saving Strategies

Being a digital nomad provides opportunities for cost-saving strategies. Consider alternative accommodation options such as house-sitting, couch-surfing, or renting through short-term rental platforms. Look for discounts or deals on transportation, flights, and travel insurance.

Cook your meals at home instead of eating out frequently. Take advantage of co-working spaces that offer affordable membership plans. By being resourceful and mindful of your spending, you can stretch your budget and save more money.

6. Get Traveler’s Insurance

Protecting yourself and your belongings is essential when living a nomadic lifestyle. Traveler’s insurance provides coverage for medical emergencies, travel delays, lost baggage, and other unforeseen events.

Incorrect example: The Easter basket contained: an egg, a chocolate rabbit, and a candy.

2. The semicolon (;) is used to separate two related but independent clauses.

Example: People continue to worry about the future; our failure to conserve resources has put the world at risk.

3. The hyphen (-) is used when adding a prefix to words, when creating compound words or when writing numbers as words.

Example: Laura is his ex-girlfriend.

Example: There are fifty-two playing cards in a deck.

4. The dash (–) is used to make a brief interruption on a sentence, an additional statement or a dramatic qualification.

Example: An introductory clause is a brief phrase that comes–yes, you guessed it–at the beginning of a sentence.

5. The parentheses (()) is used to clarify or to add a personal statement. Its usage is similar to the dash, but it denotes a stronger “side notion”.

Example: Steve Case (AOL’s former CEO) resigned from the Time-Warner board of directors in 2005.

6. The double quotation mark (“) is used to enclose direct quotations from a person or from another text. Notice that commas or periods go inside the quotation marks.

Example: “I can’t wait to see him perform!” John exclaimed.

7. The single quotation mark (‘) is used to indicate possession, to contract verbs and to denote a quotation within a quotation.

Example: Ali said, “Anna told me, ‘I wasn’t sure if you wanted to come!'”

8. The comma (,) is used to indicate a break or pause within a sentence, to denote a series or to separate adjectives.

Example: The powerful, resonating sound caught our attention.

13 Tips to Create a Better Presentation on a Computer Photo

In the evolving world of digital presentations, having a professional-looking presentation is more important than ever.

With the rise of remote working and online conferences, having a great presentation can make all the difference when it comes to connecting with your audience.

Fortunately, creating a solid presentation on your computer doesn’t have to be complicated if you know a few tricks here and there.

1. Go easy on the transitions –

Too many transitions during your presentation can be distracting and take away from key points. Rather, use subtle transitions only where necessary.

2. Utilize high-quality images –

Using high-resolution images or graphics can add an extra layer of professionalism and help draw in viewers’ attention.

When possible, source quality photos or illustrations instead of relying on stock images.

You can take screenshots on your computer as well. If you own a MacBook, for example, then there is the option of a Mac screenshot without drop shadow to make the most important visual elements stand out more.

Finally, do not be afraid to use image-editing tools even if you need to add cosmetic changes to the visuals. Every little bit helps.

3. Keep your fonts consistent –

If you are using multiple fonts, be sure they match in style and size, so they look cohesive when presented together.

A good rule of thumb is to pick two complimentary fonts and two font sizes maximum that you will use. One can also learn how to use downloaded fonts on Mac or MS Windows computers to introduce even more variety compared to the available default options.

4. Make sure the text fits into the slide –

Your text should never run off the edge of the slide; it should always fit within designated boundaries for optimal legibility and appearance.

Use a font size large enough so that viewers at the back can easily read it without squinting too much.

5. Maintain consistency in layout –

As with fonts, try to maintain consistency across each slide by utilizing similar layout elements such as headings/subheadings, spacing between items, etc., for a more polished look.

6. Stick to one color palette –

When creating a presentation, avoid using too many colors, as this can create visual chaos and affect the overall impact of your content.

Try to stick with 1-3 colors throughout your slides (excluding any photos). Additionally, avoid combining bright or neon colors, which may cause eye strain if viewed on screen for too long or if projected onto a wall in a dark room setting.

7. Implement multimedia elements –

Animations such as fades or motion effects offer an element of sophistication when used sparingly throughout presentations.

Additionally, consider adding videos or audio clips where appropriate for an even more engaging experience for viewers.

8. Choose the right background color –

The background color of your slides should never be too bright or overwhelming; opt instead for light neutral colors that don’t detract from any other elements included in each slide (text, images).

Moreover, if you’re projecting in a dim room, consider using darker colors so it won’t hurt people’s eyes while viewing them at a distance.

9. Add custom animations –

Animated transitions between slides help build credibility among viewers by showcasing professionalism.

However, too many animations could become overkill and distract the audience from the important talking points being made during the presentation.

10. Utilize graphs/charts –

Graphs and charts are great visuals that help break up long stretches of text and bring life into otherwise boring data sets.

When including these visuals, ensure they accurately represent the information being discussed as well as being relevant to what you want to convey.

11. Include notes section –

Notes sections are often overlooked but are incredibly useful when delivering presentations as they give presenters somewhere to jot down quick reminders about what needs to be said during certain parts of their talk.

12. Pay attention to timing –

Don’t go over the time limit set beforehand. To prevent this from happening, pay close attention to timing yourself while practicing prior to delivery so that nothing essential gets skipped over due to lack of time remaining.

Also, allow yourself some extra seconds between each point so the presenter has time to actually pause momentarily before going on to the next matter, which adds a natural flow to the conversation piece altogether.

13. Double-check everything –

Last but not least, make sure to double-check the presentation before delivering the final product.

This includes confirming that all graphics appear correctly, spellings are accurate, and any audio/video content works properly.

It is also worth checking through the entire thing once again just a few minutes before showtime in case you spot anything else that needs adjusting or fixing last minute.

By following these simple steps, you can create truly stunning presentations that get noticed by audiences everywhere.

Investing some extra time into ensuring presentations look professional will go a long way towards making a positive impression amongst peers and colleagues alike.

Inspiration on the Walls: Artwork for Entrepreneurs Photo

Stepping into the office, I’m immediately taken aback by the vibrant pieces of artwork that adorn the walls. Each piece tells a story, encouraging me to imagine what inspired its creation and how it resonates with my own values and experiences. It’s inspiring to work in an environment where art is not just appreciated but embraced as an essential feature, allowing people to look up from their screens and gain some perspective on who they are as human beings and what they’re working for. Art has always been capable of bringing together diverse people and ideas, so I’m proud to be surrounded by photo canvas prints that reinforce this shared humanity every day.

Why Display Wall Art in the Office or Home Office

When it comes to sprucing up the office with wall art, there are so many formats to choose from. Canvas prints, metal prints, posters – each of these have a distinct character that you can use to create the atmosphere you want in your workspace. The challenge is choosing which type of print format works best for your specific office and environment. On one hand, canvas prints give off a more traditional feeling and often look great hung above couches or desks whereas metal prints are more contemporary and vibrant. Whichever option you choose, make sure it fits with the overall space and isn’t too overpowering.

What Wall Art is Tacky for Workspaces

As a general rule, wall art in workspaces should be professional and relate to the work itself. Images of celebrities or political figures are usually too distracting and tacky. The main purpose of wall art in the workspace should be to enhance productivity and contribute to an overall goal or mission statement. Imagine looking up from your desk, taking a break from work, only to be confronted with an image of a celebrity promoting consumerism, this type of artwork doesn’t belong in professional building spaces. Choose decorations that don’t distract employees and instead focus on themes or anything else related to enhancing workplace culture.

How to Find Budget Wall Art that will Fit Your Business’s Budget

Finding budget wall art for your business doesn’t have to be hard. If you’re looking for something high quality without breaking the bank, consider using the services of a discount printing company such as CANVASDISCOUNT. With competitively priced canvas prints, framed prints, and home décor items such as tapestries, they offer great value and many options. Moreover, they also provide easy-to-use software tools that allow you to customize your order and adjust it until you’re satisfied with the result.

Why Wall Art for Offices Shouldn’t be Boring and How You Can Personalize It

If you’ve ever seen an office with walls that look bare and uninviting, then you know the importance of incorporating wall art. Office art should have just as much personality as the people in the office, not boring stock photos hung up out of duty. You can easily spruce up your work environment by personalizing it with art that reflects your company’s values, a cityscape of the local area, or an inspirational quote. Shopping for prints from galleries and independent artists is a great place to start.

Believe it or not, but artwork on my office walls has motivated me and given me inspiration. Having art around the workplace changes the atmosphere and can be a source of energy that helps you stay focused. Although it can be difficult to find wall space for big pieces of art, displaying family photos or children’s drawings is enough to inject any office full of life, brightening up the environment and making all sorts of tasks a bit more enjoyable. Big shout out to CANVASDISCOUNT.com for helping me create the perfect art pieces that keep me motivated & inspired.

Put the Big Rocks First

Stephen Covey is one of my favorite authors. In the book “First Things First” he describes a story that one of his associates experienced on a seminar. In the middle of the lecture the presenter pulled out a wide-mouth jar and placed it on the table, aside to some fist-sized rocks.

760377_stones_2.jpg

After filling the jar to the top with rocks he asked, “Is the jar full?”

People could see that no more rocks would fit, so they replied, “Yes!”

“Not so fast,” he cautioned. He then got some gravel from under the table and added it to the jar, filling the spaces between the rocks. Again, he asked, “Is the jar full?”

This time the students replied “Probably not.”

The presenter then reached a bucket of sand below the table, and dumped it on the jar, filling the spaces between the rocks and the gravel. Once again he asked “Is the jar full?”

“No!”, the students shouted.

Finally, he grabbed a pitcher of water and filled the jar completely, asking to the public what they could learn from that illustration.

One of the participants answered, “If you work at it, you can always fit more into your life.”

“No,” said the presenter. “The point is, if you don’t put the big rocks in first. . . would you ever have gotten any of them in?”

This little story can be applied to all apects of your life, including blogging. Blogging is composed of many activities, like promoting your blog, participating in online forums, writing quality articles, networking with other bloggers, reading RSS feeds, exchanging emails and so on.

The question then becomes: out of all these activities, what are the big rocks? More importantly, are you making sure that they are going first into the jar?

12 New Year Resolutions Every Online Entrepreneur Should Have Photo

The new year is a time of change and what better way to start the year off than by making some big resolutions? Whether you are just starting your own business or looking for new goals for this upcoming year, we’ve compiled a list of 12 New Year’s resolutions every online entrepreneur should have.

1. Strive for personal and professional growth

Whether you want to grow your business or become a better person, the first step starts with you. Try to learn new things this year, be it a language, a sport, or just the basics of running your own business. The only way to get better is to put in the time and effort. Online Entrepreneurs must remember that if they want to be successful, they must always strive for more knowledge and growth.

2. Open new revenue streams

Even successful online entrepreneurs need to find new revenue streams constantly. There are the usual channels, such as affiliates and advertising, but what about the more creative options? Are there any markets you could tap into that aren’t currently available? Could you try different sales methods that you still need to start using? Business owners need to focus on the safe and possibilities that could be game changers.

3. Have fun!

It’s no secret that successful entrepreneurs work hard, but any successful business owner knows the importance of downtime. The reality is that we tend to burn out without fun and relaxation time and eventually fail. Make sure you give yourself time to unwind and have fun because it will make you a better business person in the long run!

4. Take care of your mental and physical health.

It’s no secret that being healthy is an important part of any successful entrepreneur, but what does it mean to be healthy? Many successful business owners use a separate calendar for their work and health. The reason is simple: you must make time for your personal life to succeed in both business and career. One of the best things to do to your diet to start taking a fish oil supplement. Essential for heart and mental health. It’s also great for your vision since you’ll likely be spending much time infront of a computer screen!

5. Stay organized

Running your own business means always being on the move and chasing new leads and sales. It’s easy to let your personal life become a mess, but that is where many entrepreneurs fail in the long run. It is important to stay organized and structured so you stay focused on the most important things in life. Try using an app like Any.DO, which will help you stay on top of any project, task, or follow-up in your daily routines.

6. Don’t burn the candle at both ends.

Many entrepreneurs need help balancing daily operational tasks and long-term strategic efforts. The reason for this is simple: we need to let go of some of our daily tasks to spend more time developing the long-term road map for our business. Try using a system like OKR or SMART goals to set your strategic plan for the entire year and see if it doesn’t improve your growth rate in a significant way!

7. Have a clear vision of your online business

No matter how successful your online business is, it will eventually fail if you don’t have a clear business vision. This is often one of the most important and overlooked steps in any successful entrepreneur’s roadmap. A strong vision and strategy will help you fully concentrate on your current activities and see the bigger picture in which you work.

8. Have a well-defined business plan

Like any other business, online entrepreneurs must have a well-defined plan to reach their goals. With this roadmap and roadmap-specific goals, you will know how far you’ve come and where you need to go next. Try using some form of a business plan, whether a blueprint or just a simple outline. Try setting your goals in the context of that plan and see if it makes it easier for you to follow through on your New Years’ resolutions!

9. Network, network, and network!

It’s no secret that networking can be one of the most effective ways to gain exposure and new opportunities for your business. While LinkedIn is the biggest social media network for professional networking, don’t forget about Facebook or Twitter. Many online entrepreneurs use their profiles to connect with like-minded people and exchange good ideas. Remember real-life networking too! Some of the most effective relationship-building is being done face-to-face.

10. Keep calm and focused.

Running your own business means always being on the move. It’s very easy to get distracted by new ideas and lose focus on what is happening in front of your eyes. This can also be related to always focusing on the result and forgetting the small steps needed to get there. It’s important always to stay calm and focused to achieve success!

11. Stay updated with new technologies.

While this might seem obvious, many entrepreneurs still need to catch up on what’s new in the marketplace and how it might help them. In a highly competitive market such as the eCommerce business, staying ahead is essential for your business growth. Read about new trends and technologies available to you and try implementing them in your business strategies!man sitting on chair

12. Give back

There is nothing more gratifying than helping others to succeed. Most of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs attribute their success to the help they receive from others willing to give it. Giving back doesn’t mean that you must stop focusing on your own business, but rather that you help other people reach their goals in any way possible!

Right now, there are thousands of entrepreneurs across the world that keep a daily journal of their successes and failures. The goal is to learn from our failures and use them as inspiration to improve our approach the next day. While we can’t change yesterday, we can make sure that we are always improving our future.

Best Websites for Internet Usage Statistics in 2024

Ever wondered how big the internet really is? Here’s an awe-inspiring fact: As of 2024, we’re talking about over 4.9 billion internet users worldwide. Isn’t it exciting? That’s where “internet statistics” come into play, revealing a fascinating world within the digital realm. Whether you’re a digital marketer, a researcher, a curious netizen, or a business owner looking to expand your digital footprint, understanding internet usage statistics is an essential part of your toolkit.person using MacBook Air

A Journey Through Time

In the early ’90s, the internet was a novelty, used by a relatively small number of people. Fast-forward to today, and it’s hard to imagine a world without the web. From a modest beginning with a mere 600 websites in 1993, we’ve now reached an astonishing 1.8 billion websites globally.

But the expansion of the internet didn’t just stop at the number of websites. We’ve seen a shift in how people access and consume information online. In the early 2000s, desktops ruled the internet world. Now, we’re in the era of mobile, where more than half of all internet traffic comes from mobile devices.

The scope of the internet has also expanded significantly. We’ve transitioned from basic email communication and information searching to a world where e-commerce, social media, online learning, telecommuting, streaming entertainment, and more are commonplace. All these developments have been captured in internet usage statistics, painting a vibrant picture of our online lives.turned on monitoring screen

The Essentials

Now that you’ve seen how valuable these statistics can be, where do you find this rich trove of data? There are numerous online sources providing internet usage statistics, but they’re not all created equal. Let’s break down the essential features to look for when seeking your perfect statistical match.

Delving Deeper into the Criteria for Choosing the Best Websites for Internet Statistics

When you’re exploring internet usage statistics, remember you’re embarking on a quest for quality information. Having a clear understanding of what sets apart an outstanding resource from an average one will ensure you find a site that delivers in spades. Let’s further dissect the essential features of top-tier websites for internet statistics.

The Importance of Reliability

In the realm of statistics, credibility is king. Reliable data lays the foundation for effective decision-making, whether you’re crafting a marketing strategy or researching market trends. In contrast, unreliable data can lead to misguided conclusions and potentially costly mistakes.

When judging a website’s reliability, consider the source of its data. Credible websites should clearly state their data sources, which should ideally include respected research institutions, government agencies, or established industry organizations. If a website isn’t transparent about where its data comes from, treat its statistics with a healthy dose of skepticism.aerial photography of city during night time

The Need for Breadth and Depth of Data

Quality data isn’t just about being correct—it also needs to tell a complete story. A top-tier website for internet statistics should offer both breadth and depth of data.

Breadth refers to the range of topics covered. Does the website only provide statistics on internet users worldwide, or does it also delve into specific areas like mobile usage, social media trends, and e-commerce growth? A broad scope ensures you have a comprehensive understanding of the digital landscape.

Depth, on the other hand, refers to the level of detail in the data. It’s not enough to know how many people use the internet globally. You’ll also want to know who these people are (their demographics), how they access the internet (device types), and what they do online (activities).

Update Frequency

The digital world is anything but static. With technological advances and changing consumer behaviors, internet trends can shift dramatically in a short period. That’s why the frequency of data updates is a critical factor in choosing a statistics website.

Look for sites that update their statistics regularly—at least annually, but preferably quarterly or even monthly. This will ensure that you have access to the most recent data, allowing you to spot current trends and stay ahead of the curve.

User Interface

Lastly, consider the user experience. Navigating the website should be straightforward, and interpreting the data should be simple. The best websites for internet statistics present their data in a clear, easy-to-understand format, with visual aids like charts and graphs that bring the numbers to life. They may also offer features like search functionality, filters, or categories to help you quickly find the data you need.

Remember, the goal is to gain valuable insights from these statistics. If you’re struggling to navigate the website or interpret the data, it will only hinder your understanding of the trends and patterns in internet usage. A superior user interface can make your exploration of internet statistics both fruitful and enjoyable.

The Paradox of Choice Photo

In economics there is a theory called “The Paradox of Choice”. It states that increasing the number of choices will improve the user experience, but only ultil a certain point. After that point the added choices will not only be indifferent to the user, but they might also become counterproductive. The Paradox of Choice Photo

A simple example: market researches found that individuals in a supermarket are 10 times more likely to make a purchase if they have to choose among six rather than among 20 flavors of jam.

Now, what do jam flavors have to do with your blog you might ask? Your blog, just like the supermarket shelf, presents many choices for the visitor. Every link, in fact, is a choice. When someone visits your blog he will need to choose among reading the home page, clicking on a single category, clicking on the advertising, contacting you and so on. If that is the case you need to make sure that you are not overwhelming your visitor with too many choices (links).

This approach applies to the whole blog design. If you place too many fields on the sidebar like “Latest Posts”, “Latests Comments”, “Top commentators”, “Blogroll”, Polls, Badges, Meta Data and so on the reader will probably get confused and avoid the sidebar. Similarly if you fill the bottom of your posts with “Related Entries”, advertising, subscription buttons, affiliate links and other extra information the user will just get lost and skip those sections altogether.

Do not get me wrong here, having those items on your blog are important, but not all of them bundled together otherwise they will lose the usefulness. Limit the set of choices for the reader and he will be much more likely to perform an action (i.e. click on a link).

Writing First Thing in the Morning

background image

So I’m sitting here. At my desk. In the morning. And I’m writing this post. Yesterday, I was writing in the morning too. And the day before. Is there someone forcing me to do this? No, I simply choose to work this way.

Why would you set your day to always write first thing in the morning?! Isn’t being a blogger all about freedom and being able to do whatever you want, whenever you want to?!

Well, bloggers are pretty free people, but being free doesn’t mean that you can’t set some of your activities to a fixed schedule. Especially if those activities simply make sense.

And it really does make sense for writing. Here’s why.

Benefits of writing in the morning and the power of habit

Let’s start with the latter – the power of habit.

Habit is probably the most powerful thing that drives us into doing anything. And I really mean it. Once something becomes our habit, it isn’t difficult any longer, requires very little effort, and gets done pretty quickly.

But if that doesn’t explain the situation enough, let’s tackle it from a different angle.

I’m sure you’ll admit that some bad habits are extremely difficult to fight. Sometimes it takes months or years, or even a lifetime (for some people). I’m sure that every smoker and late riser can relate to this…

That’s the true power of habit, no matter good or bad, once it is set, it stays with us for years.

So what’s the point of turning writing into a first-thing-in-the-morning habit?

First of all, as I said a minute ago, once writing becomes your habit, it will be a natural activity. One that doesn’t require any effort. One that isn’t scary in any way, or challenging in any way. Simply, a natural habit.

The second benefit is something that sits in our mind.

Everything sits in our mind

Even though our brain is an extremely complex thing, some of its characteristics are pretty predictable.

For instance, once our brain gets a grasp that one particular activity is being done every day, first thing in the morning, and it has been done for the past month or so, it will get used to that activity.

Our brain will simply be anticipating that activity, having all the required tools in place ready to be used, at the exact time when the activity usually happens.

This is something that can help us extremely. And I’m not exaggerating. Once your brain is used to you writing every day in the morning, it will prepare all your writing resources and skills to be in their top shape waiting for you.

This is something that can (and will) improve your writing significantly.

And it’s nothing new. People are using this trick all the time in many different fields.

Like, for example, professional boxing. Once the time and date of a fight is set, every training prior to the fight takes place at the same time. Why? So the body and the brain of the boxer can get used to it, and be ready when it’s time to get in the ring.

Many professional sportsmen use this trick, not only boxers. It simply works in most imaginable scenarios. Writing and blogging included.

But improving your results isn’t the only reason why you should at least give this a try. There are other benefits.

Fighting the early-day confusion and warming up

Mornings can be confusing … I’m sure you can relate.

You wake up and there’s so much stuff to do that you don’t know where to start. So you don’t start at all for a while and go to Facebook instead.

Sometimes we fall into such a trap, despite the fact we know that the only thing we have to do is START. No matter what it is exactly, the first step is always the most difficult, and once we’re going, we’re going.

Having a first-thing-in-the-morning activity can be of great help here. There’s no confusion any more. You know that no matter how much stuff you have to do, you always start your day by writing.

Another benefit. Writing is a great warm-up activity for your brain. It gets you ready for other things the day can bring.

And there’s also the most obvious benefit of them all… You simply start your day with a fresh and shiny article, ready to be published, sent as a guest post, sold, or whatever else you’re doing with your content.

How to set a habit of writing in the morning

First of all, you have to realize that the most difficult part is the initial phase. The first couple of times you try to write in the morning.

It may simply not feel natural, nor easy. And the results might not be that good … well, sorry, I’m just telling it like it is.

But remember, this is always the case when setting new habits. Like the habit of early rising, for example. Do you remember how difficult it was to get up early during the first week? Or do you remember how difficult it was not to smoke during the first month of your new cigarette-free lifestyle?

You simply need to get through this. Here’s what I advise you to do during the first week:

  1. Start every day by writing a personal journal. Journal entries are very easy to write because they don’t require any knowledge, mindset, or prior information. You simply fire up a text editor and start writing on whatever topic you want. As little as 100-200 words is enough.
  2. The actual writing. This is where you write the actual thing you want to write. And you don’t stop until you finish the whole piece.
  3. Reward yourself and have a break. Have a small treat. Whatever makes sense.
  4. Proceed with your other tasks for the day.

If you do these four steps long enough (for like a month maybe) then after a while they will become natural and won’t require any effort on your end. Also, you will be able to do them much more quickly.

I know this personally … because it’s 8:30AM where I’m sitting right now.

What is your opinion? Have you tried this trick yet? Also, feel free to share if you have any advice of your own that’s similarly counterintuitive.

Thanks to Karol K. for helping me with the article. He is a 20-something year old web 2.0 entrepreneur from Poland and a writer at ThemeFuse.com, where he shares various WordPress advice. Hold Tight, It Will Only Get Easier

Most bloggers that get discouraged and decide to abandon their blogs tend to do so on the first three to six months. Sometimes the traffic is not growing as fast as they would like. Other times they are not happy with the money that they are making.

Personally I think that quitting after such a short period is a mistake.

There are two situations where quitting would be a smart move. One is when the blogger consciously decided to try out a new niche. In that case he must have some previous experience with blogs and websites, and he should know what numbers to expect and how to evaluate if this new blog has potential or not.

The other case refers to blogs that get stuck. If after six months you are still struggling to receive a couple hundred unique visitors daily then you probably are doing something wrong. Under this scenario you should probably stop to rethink your strategies (niche selection, content creation and promotion strategies) and try again.

On all other cases, however, the best idea is probably to hold tight and keep working hard until your blog or website achieves some critical mass. It does not matter how small or big your traffic is, as long as it is growing month after month you are on the right track.

The first three to six months are the hardest, and after that period you will notice that things will flow more smoothly, for several reasons.

First of all your content will achieve a bigger audience, improving the chances of receiving backlinks and traffic. Suppose two blogs, one with 200 daily unique visitors and the other with 2,000 daily unique visitors, publish the exact same article. The second one will have much higher chances of receiving backlinks, because more people will be exposed to its content.

This means that as your audience grow you will be able to spend less time promoting your content and more time actually producing it and making sure that it has quality.

Secondly, the credibility of your website will grow with the time, both for human visitors and search engines. Suppose again that two blogs, one that has been online for 1 year and has a Google PageRank of 5 and the other that has been online for 1 month and has a Google PageRank of 1, publish the exact same article. Even if we disregard the backlinks that each article will receive, the page of the first blog will appear first in the search results because that domain has more trust in the eyes of search engines.

These are just two examples of how allowing your blog to grow and mature will benefit you. The are several others: over the time it will be easier to monetize it, to get favors and support from your readers, to create a network of contacts, to receive freebies and so on.

If you are considering to quit, therefore, my advice is to hold tight a little longer, and then take that decision.

Today – RSS Awareness Day!

Finally we are at here. I must confess that when I decided on the date, I had no clue that it would clash with International Workers Day (you can see that I have been working from my home for a long time already…). I am not sure if this will help or hinder the project, but regardless its RSS Day today to let’s get the word out!

If you are reading this and have no clue what this RSS thing is all about, just head to RSSDay.org and you will find a succinct explanation over there. Here is a small quotation:

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a format used to deliver information from websites and pages that get updated regularly. An RSS document (which is called feed) contains either a summary or the full content from a website.

The main benefit of RSS is that it enables people to stay connected with their favorite websites without having to visit them. Once you subscribe to a particular RSS feed, you will automatically receive updates from the website that publishes the feed, whenever they release new content. The video below illustrates the process.

If you have a blog or website, help us spread the word by writing about RSS (mention it is the RSS Awareness day, teach your readers about the format, write a poem, anything will do!) or wear one of the banners found at http://rssday.org/spread/.

That “Spread the word!” page was also submitted to Digg, so hopefully diggers will give us a hand to let as many people as possible know about the event.

Finally, a big thank you for everyone who already helped and for those that will do today.

15 Tips for Writing Better Posts

A blog is only as good as its content. Increasing the quality of our blog posts can bring traffic, inbound links, social bookmarks, subscribers, comments, and other rewards every blogger works hard to achieve. This post lists ten simple things you can do to produce better posts, every time.Free Photo Of Man Using Laptop Stock Photo

Write headlines that promise value

The reason numbered headlines are so in vogue is that they’re incredibly specific about what the reader will get by reading the article. You can be both specific and gripping without numbers, however, as long as you use your headlines to give readers an enticing preview not of what your article is about, but what it has to offer. A good strategy is to think of your headline as the sign on a door you want readers to open: what kind of sign would make the reader want to peek inside?

Begin with a gripping lead

A great headline will get your readers to open the door, but the strength of your first paragraph will determine whether they step inside. The first few sentences of your posts should expand on the headline and get more specific about what the content has to offer, whether it be entertainment, humor, information, or important facts.

Signpost your logic with sub-headings

I tend to go against the grain in my reasoning for using sub-headings. As far as I’m concerned, sub-headings help your visitors read, not simply scan. Good sub-headings give readers an angle to approach the following paragraph, help interlink your ideas, and break up complicated thoughts into manageable chunks.

Utilize whitespace and images

Whitespace is the empty space in your blog layout (whether it’s white or not). Whitespace around your text makes it much easier to read, and a simple way to introduce more whitespace into your posts is to use frequent paragraph breaks. Another strategy to make your posts more readable is to break up your posts with relevant and illustrative images.

Weave appropriate links into your words

A good rule of thumb: whenever you write a string of words specifically relevant to content you’ve seen elsewhere, or a previous post you’ve written, turn those words into a link. There are a great number of benefits to doing this. You may be noticed by those you’re linking to, you can get traffic from trackbacks, it can encourage readers to explore your blog, and it adds another layer of depth and detail to what you write.

Suggest further reading

When appropriate, direct readers to other content you’ve written on the topic at the end of your post. Some bloggers do this with the ‘Related Posts’ widget, but you’re more likely to capitalize on reader attention of you suggest the links within the body of your post, while they’re still in ‘reading mode’.

Engage the reader

A simple strategy for increasing your comments is to ask readers what they think. Opinions are much more freely given than experiences, so asking for opinions is likely to produce better results.Free Woman Using Smartphone and Laptop Stock Photo

Rigorously edit what you’ve written

Check for typos, make sure your links work, check that your logic is clear and your formatting is displaying correctly. Fixing up your posts at a later date may cause the post to re-appear in feed readers, which won’t be appreciated by those who’ve already seen it.

Make it shorter

Delete unnecessary words, sentences, and paragraphs. Retain only the minimum amount of information needed to make your point. Readers are more likely to commit to reading something they know they will finish. You don’t need to make every post you write short, but you will always benefit from making it shorter.

If you have the time, let your posts marinate

When you’ve been working on a piece of writing for an hour or two it can be hard to look at it with fresh eyes. You’ve probably noticed how different a piece of writing can seem when you re-read it a few days later, once you’ve had time to forget the thoughts behind each sentence. Letting your posts sit for a time will allow you to better look at your work from the perspective of a reader, and work out what needs to be improved.

A proper blog structure leads to better conversion

Most marketers know that blogs have insane potential to turn your visitors into your customers. But, conversions through blogging thus depends on various other factors other than the content you write.

To convert your blog into a lead magnet there are many components that need to fix for optimizing your blog for better lead generation or conversion.

You need to create a proper blog structure, which is easy to navigate and provide all the option to subscribe any piece of information. Conversions through blogging depends heavily on your blog structure. The structure of a blog, in turn, is affected by various blog elements like:

  • Sticky Header: A sticky header will consist of all necessary information about the company services and products, culture, and working methodology. No matter how much you scroll down it will remain with the webpage on the top place. This makes users to find any service related information easily.
  • Blog Categories: The list of blog categories must be placed right below the header with a subscription on the right side. Giving an easy option for readers to navigate through different category section on your blog will make them to consider the content. That’s how they will subscribe it to get updates on regular basis.
  • Subscription Option: An easy subscription will always add new contacts to your lead generation sheet. Thus, providing an easy subscription box on the top of your blog post or at the right-side column of your blog homepage is considered most effective. However, you can pull more contacts by showing pop-ups on your blog on different time intervals.
  • Search Bar: The search bar should be placed just below the category section for the users to look up other pieces of content if they want to.

A blog structure defines the extent of good user experience (UX) and easy navigation and thus must be designed strategically.

Place Call-to-Action (CTA) to boost conversion

A Call-to-Action (CTA) if placed strategically have the potential to turn your blog into a lead generating machine.

Basically, a CTA is the box through which your users can join the readers community and that’s how you’ll be able to collect leads on your blog.

However, the placement of a CTA is based on user behavior. And a personalized CTA works 42% better than an untargeted one since that is created based on user behavior.

By analyzing the different behavior of users on your webpage or blog you can place a CTA in three different styles on your blog, which are as follow:

The Inline CTA is used correctly only if it is placed after ample information that has been given related to the CTA in the blog.

The Sidebar CTA is placed on the side of the blog, which is mainly for gated content subscription or other important events in the industry.

The Bottom CTA is placed after the entire blog post. Once a reader gets finished with post reading then it is a smart way to show him a way to subscribe the information on regular basis.

Isn’t it clever? To analyze different user behavior on your blog you can take help of Hotjar. The heatmap tool will show you different user actions on the different section on your blog. This will help you place CTA strategically on your blog homepage and posts.

Empower engagement on your blog post

Engagement on your blog shows the level of involvement, thus it is always good to interact with your audience. By letting your readers get in touch with your blog post through social network is a popular yet most effective way to engage people with the content. But, to achieve higher engagement level on your blog you need to place social sharing plugins at the right place.

Only 45% of marketers think that their Facebook efforts are effective. This is due to wrong placement of social sharing buttons and social engagement counter. The social sharing buttons can be placed on the sidebar and below the post.

The sidebar social sharing counter should be sticky so that the user gets the opportunity to share the content whenever he feels like without having to search for it.

You can also give an option to share your post on their social networks by placing a social sharing counter at the end of your post.

However, using the Click to Tweet plugin will increase the chances of the article being shared by providing a stat or fact within the post for the user to directly tweet it.

Integrate Optin Forms to collect more leads

Optin forms are the most efficient way to pull readers into your customer’s list.
The opt-in form needs to be integrated to the blog in a way that it doesn’t pop up before enough information has been provided to the reader.

An opt-in form must no doubt include the mandatory fields, but it also needs to be as short as possible. The optin form can be integrated in various sections in different styles.

An exit overlay pop up comes up when the user shows an intent to quit the blog page. The time intent pop up turns up after the user has spent certain amount of time on the blog page. The scroll intent CTA pops up after a certain extent of scrolling has been done by the reader. The sticky header and footer CTA pops up are placed in the header and footer respectively.

Optimize the loading speed of your blog

The content and the design of an entire blog page will go down the drain if the blog page doesn’t load fast. More than 40% of people abandon a webpage if it takes more than 3 seconds to load thus, a webpage must load within or less than 3 seconds.
Google introduced Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) to optimize webpages for mobile devices with quick loading speed. Google AMP has been introduced keeping both speed and mobile first approach in mind. Integrating Google AMP to your website will not only push your page up the SERP but will also make sure than it comes up in a carousel, on top, that only accommodates AMP pages.

Albert Einstein has made many amazing contributions to the scientific world, including the theory of relativity, the founding of relativistic cosmology, the prediction of the deflection of light by gravity, the quantum theory of atomic motion in solids, the zero-point energy concept, and the quantum theory of a monatomic gas which predicted Bose—Einstein condensation … and finally he brings us 8 amazing blogging lessons.

Jokes apart, Einstein was perhaps the most influential scientists to ever live, and I would be strange if we could not find some blogging related principles among his ideas, right?

1. Persevere

“It’s not that I’m so smart; it’s just that I stay with problems longer.”

Your blog won’t succeed overnight; success requires perseverance! There’s no such thing as an “overnight success.” What often appears to happen overnight is the result of many years of work.

This is what I call the “silent years” of success. If you can persevere through the “silent years,” then you will qualify to succeed.

Eddie Cantor said, “It takes twenty years to become an overnight success.”

2. Focus

“Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.”

I like to say, you can do anything, but not everything! To succeed in blogging you must give your blog the attention it deserves. If you want a part-time income, then you put in part-time hours, if you want a full-time income, …you’ll have to put in full-time hours.

Focus your efforts, if you want to succeed! Focused energy is power, and it’s the difference between success and failure.

If you never focus your efforts …you won’t have a future, just a longer today.

3. Create Value

“Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.”

Don’t waste your time trying to create a successful blog, dedicate your time creating a valuable blog. If your blog is valuable to others, it will succeed.

You create value for others by solving their problems. Your blog must solve people’s problems. You will only be rewarded in this lifetime for the problems that you solve for others.

Labor to be valuable and success will chase you down!

4. Be Curious

“I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.”

What you’re curious about is what other like-minded people are also curious about, so blog about things that pique your curiosity.

Don’t write about the mundane, and the obvious; explore your curiosity. Research the unknown and document what has never been documented before.

You have to “think bigger,” Einstein said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.”

You have to think differently, he said, “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would suffice.”

5. Make Mistakes

“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”

Make mistakes; mistakes make you better, smarter, faster, and more relevant. If you’re not making mistakes then you’re not making progress. Get rejected a few times, mess up a few projects, this is the pathway to success.

Want to succeed twice as fast, make twice as many mistakes, run into twice as many obstacles.

Frank Clark said, “If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.”

6. Don’t Be Insane

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

You can’t keep doing the same thing everyday and expect different results. In other words, if your blogging routine is the same from month-to-month, your results will be the same from month-to-month.

In order for your results to change, you must change your actions, to the degree that your actions change will be to the degree that your results change.

7. Expect Opposition

“Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.”

There will always be opposition. People will oppose your blog, your ideas, and the risk that you’re taking. Zig Ziglar said, “Little men, with little minds, and little imaginations, go through life in little ruts, smugly resisting all changes which would jar their little worlds.” Never let “little men” stop you from achieving your dreams. Great spirits have always encountered great opposition.

8. Play Better

“You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.”

When it’s all said and done, your success will depend on how well you played the game. You must commit to play the game better than anyone else. If you can play the game “better,” you will succeed!

What Is Success?

This past weekend I was browsing through my RSS reader, and I came across an interesting post titled What is success? Impact.

The author is basically questioning what should be considered success (on a professional level), and he comes to the conclusion that success should be measured as the positive impact his work will have upon the lives of other people.

The article caught my attention because I have the exact same opinion.

Obviously I don’t think there is right or wrong as to how we define success. The term itself is a subjective thing, so what success means to you might be different from what it means to me or other people, and this is perfectly fine.

That being said, I think it is useful to discuss about such definitions, because it helps us to analyze whether or not we are moving in the right direction.

For example, most people tend to equate success with money. That is, the more money you make, the more successful you are. But under this definition one could argue that a drug dealer who makes millions of dollars annually is a very successful person. I don’t agree with this. I could give you that such drug dealer is a savvy businessman, but I wouldn’t call him successful, because the impact he has on the life of other people is actually a very negative one. The same thing could be said about online spammers, scammers and so on.

Now take Linus Torvalds as another example. He is the founder of the Linux movement, which created one of the most successful open source projects to date, and enabled millions of people to use a free and very reliable operating system. I am not sure how rich he is, but even if he was broke I would call him a successful person, because he had a huge impact on the lives of people from around the world.

Note that these things are not mutually exclusive either. In other words, it is possible to make a lot of money and have a positive impact in the lives of many people at the same time (and often times they go together). Just think about Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, Larry Page and Sergei Brin.

But, I suspect that these folks were first and foremost motivated by the possibility of making something big that would impact many people. As Steve Jobs say, by the possibility of putting a dent in the universe. Sure, they were no philanthropists, so the money was welcome too, but I don’t think it was the only nor the main thing they were pursuing.

Which leads us to one question: are you working to make as much money as possible, or to make as big an impact as possible?

It doesn’t matter if you run a blog or run a business, there will come a moment in time when you’re really stuck for fresh ideas. Fresh ideas can lead to new business opportunities, so brainstorming should be a process you adopt frequently if you want to stay ahead of your competition. I’ve compiled a list of tips and tricks that I use when I’m innovating, and each apply if you’re trying to come up with new products, services or blog posts. Spotting solutions and opportunities is just a form of mental exercise. The more you do it, the better you’ll get!

1. Be really grumpy! Keep track of the things that annoy you. This is a great place to start, as you know the problem intimately as well as being the first customer for any solution.

2. Listen to your clients, customers and readers. Complaints are a great source of insight as it’s a very quick way to find something that needs a solution. So identify the common problems that your customers are experiencing and consider possible solutions to their troubles.

3. Think like a child. Children have a fantastically simplistic and candid view of the world, something we lose as we become adults. Employ a strong sense of curiosity and simplicity when looking for solutions. So many things in this world happen due to convention or habit, so thinking like a child helps to break this pattern.

4. Talk to friends and family. Find out what annoys your friends and family. What do they moan about? What problems do they encounter? Do they say stuff like “if only there was a service/product that did XYZ”?

5. Watch and listen to the news. Keeping up with current affairs will help you to keep up-to-date with new legislation and new regulations. Any new constraint usually means that some kind of process needs to change. Where there’s change, there’s usually an opportunity.

6. Learn from your mistakes. When you do something wrong, do you work out how and why you made that mistake? What could have limited the impact of your mistakes? Is there something, that if it existed, would have stopped you from making that mistake?

7. Do volunteer work. Mixing with people from an entirely different background will help you to think from a different perspective. You can make new friends and get ideas for things you don’t usually think about. As a bonus, you help someone too!

8. Bounce ideas with a friend or business partner. If there’s someone who you work well with, spend time brainstorming ideas together. Two different minds can often lead to great ideas, since you’ll find you feed off each others thoughts.

9. Analyse your products/services. Look at your current offerings and identify the best and worst features. See if you can add any features to your existing offerings. Also consider different markets who would be interested in what you offer. You can do the same for a competitors products and services too.

10. Focus on the problem, not existing solutions. Rather than thinking about existing solutions, go back to the original problem. Given a blank canvas, how would you solve the problem? e.g. rather than re-invent the toilet, come up with alternative ways to dispose of human waste cheaply, conveniently and hygienically.

11. Go people-watching. Unleash your inner spy! Spend time watching people go about their everyday lives. What are they doing? How do they do it? Can you spot any obvious problems?

12. Distract yourself. Have a change of scene. Do something that you love doing that has nothing to do with your business or blog. Get lost in what you’re doing. Often we come up with solutions when we’re not even thinking about the problem in the first place.

13. Get feedback. Make the effort to find out what your colleagues, customers and readers think about what you do. Ask what you could do to improve. Listen to their feedback, good or bad. You’ll gain a great deal of insight when you ask people to tell you what they think your strengths are.

14. Refactor, reorganise and rethink. Consider services, products or concepts that are too basic or too complex. Sometimes just adjusting an existing solution will yield more ideas.

15. Critique everything. Question everything, and ask yourself “why?”! Intelligently analyse your environment and think of improvements. See what lessons you can learn about the good and bad things in your environment.

16. Read lots. Any kind of reading material can give you ideas. Find a range of materials that you enjoy reading (there’s no point reading something you hate!). Ideas can come from fiction, magazine articles, scientific journals, anything really!

17. Network, in real life and online. Listen to people who have similar interests to you and find out what they love or hate. What are the common or repetitive problems they would love solved? This is also a great way to find someone to brainstorm with.

18. Regularly read forums related to your interests. Forums often have threads dedicated to frequently asked questions (FAQs). You can borrow ideas from these FAQs as well as be on the look out for questions that pop up on the forums on a regular basis.

19. Look for gaps. Identify gaps in products, services or articles that exist between you and your competitors. Then consider what you can offer to address that gap.

20. Keep a notebook handy at all times. Inspiration can hit you at any time, and you can forget it just as quickly. Keeping a record of this inspiration is vital. Make sure you revisit entries in your notebook on a regular basis too! You might be able to elaborate on ideas you had in the past.

So there you go, 20 tips to help you identify opportunities. There’s a common theme among these tips, namely to analyse problems in as much detail as you can. When you get ideas, consider all ideas, regardless of how stupid they might seem. Then weigh up the pros and cons of those ideas as solutions.

Develop an Algorithm for Your Online Passwords and Never Forget One Again

I am sure that most of you guys have dozens of passwords for different websites. Blogs, hosting plans, social networking sites, online services, forums, you name it. The problem is to remember what password is for what website (and using the same one all over the place would be crazy for security reasons).

A first solution is to use a password manager, as I recommended in the past. However, even using that I often end up losing passwords. This happens when I forget to sync my database of passwords between different computers, for example.

To solve this problem I am starting to use a technique to be able to know all my passwords automatically. How? By creating an algorithm to create the passwords.

Here is one example:

  • The first digit is the number of characters on the name of the website.
  • The second digit is “c” is the number in the first step was odd, and “t” if it was even.
  • The third digit is the last letter of the name of the website.
  • The fourth digit is “$” if the letter in the previous step was a vowel, and “%” if it was a consonant.
  • The last three digits are the first three letters of the name of the website.

Using the algorithm above, your password on Twitter would be “7cr%twi” and on Facebook it would be “8tk%fac”.

Once you start using the algorithm to create your passwords you will be able to remember any password by applying it again. Obviously the important thing is to make sure no one knows what your algorithm is (and that the algorithm is slightly complex).

Let’s Write an eBook Together!

The idea of writing an eBook with collective efforts has been on my mind for a while now, so let’s give it a try. Basically I want to create a project that would group together the ideas and tips from different people, in a way that it would benefit both the collaborators and the end user (i.e. the readers).

The Process

The topic for this eBook is going to be “Tips, Tricks and Strategies to Make Money Online.” It is an not the newest of the topics, I know, but you can’t deny that it is a very popular one. Additionally, the collaborative format will add some freshness to it, because on the same eBook you will find the tips and opinions from a wide range of people, all with different backgrounds and experiences on the Internet.

The creation of the eBook will be pretty simple. Participants will send me their tips, tricks or strategies to make money online, and I will organize them together. Each page will feature one different person.

Once the eBook is formatted, styled and ready to go, I will release it on Daily Blog Tips, and all the participants will be allowed to release it on their websites or blogs, too.

Why You Should Participate

I know that I need to make the project beneficial for everyone involved, so here is why you should participate.

1. First of all it might help you with your brand. Your name and website URL will be featured on top of the page where we will include your submission. I can’t know for sure how many people will end up downloading the eBook, but there is a possibility that thousands of people will, and they will all come across your name.

2. Secondly, I want to make sure that the participants will also gain traffic out of the eBook. How so? In the end of each submission, we will include 3 links to popular or useful posts on your blog. You are free to choose what those 3 posts are going to be (I will just have some editorial control to make sure they are indeed useful and related). These 3 links are optional though.

Here is how a page of the eBook would look like:

ebook-together

3. Finally, the participants will also have the right to distribute the eBook to their email or RSS subscribers (but you won’t be able to offer direct downloads for the eBook).

This could be useful for people looking to build an email list, or to give your visitors an incentive to subscribe to your blog.

Rules for Participating

If you want to participate, all you need to do is to send me an email (danielATdailyblogtips.com) with your tips, tricks or strategies to make money online. For example, you could write about the importance of networking with people online, or you could share an strategy to make money with mini websites and Google AdSense.

The better your advice or strategy, the higher the chances of someone deciding to click on the links to your blog posts.

Your submission must have between 200 and 300 words. Make sure to include the 3 posts that want to appear on your page as well (and please proofread!)

The deadline for the submissions is next Wednesday, February 4 (midnight EST).

“Bing sucks” – a phrase you’ve probably heard or seen more than once if you’ve spent any time on the internet. But before we delve into why this sentiment is so prevalent, let’s take a moment to understand what Bing is. Bing, launched by Microsoft in 2009, is a web search engine designed to compete with the industry giant, Google. It offers a variety of search services, including web, video, image, and map search products.

I personally think Bing is inferior to other search engines. Despite Microsoft’s best efforts, Bing has struggled to shake off the perception that it’s an inferior search engine. This perception isn’t without reason – users often cite poor search results, limited indexing, and a less intuitive user experience as reasons for their dissatisfaction. But what do these criticisms actually mean? Let’s break them down.

Here is a comparison of Bing with other top search engines (Google, Yahoo, Baidu, Yandex, and DuckDuckGo).

Reason #1 – Poor Search Results

To understand why Bing’s search results are often criticized, we first need to understand how search engines work. At the heart of every search engine are algorithms – complex sets of rules that determine which web pages are relevant to a user’s search query. These algorithms rely on an index, a massive database of information about web pages.

Bing’s algorithm, like all search engine algorithms, is a closely guarded secret. However, it’s generally accepted that Bing’s algorithm tends to prioritize different factors compared to Google’s. For example, Bing places a higher emphasis on social media integration, while Google focuses more on backlinks.

Let’s consider a real-life example. If you were to search for “best pizza places in New York” on both Bing and Google, you might notice some differences in the results. Bing might show you a list of popular pizza chains, while Google might show you a mix of popular chains and local favorites, ranked by reviews and ratings.

This difference in search results can be attributed to the different algorithms and indexing strategies used by Bing and Google. While Bing’s results aren’t necessarily wrong, they might not be as helpful or relevant to a user looking for a unique, local pizza experience in New York.

Poor search results can significantly impact user experience and satisfaction. If a user can’t find the information they’re looking for, or if they have to sift through irrelevant results, they’re likely to become frustrated and switch to a different search engine.

I am Willing to Try Bing, But So Far It Sucks Photo

Reason #2 – Limited Indexing

Web indexing is the process by which search engines collect and store information about web pages. This information is then used to provide relevant search results. The more comprehensive a search engine’s index, the more likely it is to provide accurate and relevant search results.

Bing, like all search engines, uses automated bots known as web crawlers to index the web. These bots visit web pages, follow links on those

pages, and then send the information back to Bing to be indexed. However, Bing’s indexing has been criticized for being less comprehensive than other search engines. While Bing’s web crawlers are designed to index as many sites as possible, they may skip some sites. This could be due to a variety of factors, such as the site’s robots.txt file blocking Bing’s web crawlers, or the site not being linked to from any other sites that Bing’s web crawlers have visited.

Limited indexing can lead to less comprehensive search results. If Bing’s web crawlers haven’t indexed a site, then that site’s pages won’t appear in Bing’s search results, even if they’re relevant to a user’s search query. This can lead to users missing out on valuable information and having a less satisfying search experience.

Compared to other search engines, Bing’s indexing is often seen as less comprehensive. For example, Google’s web crawlers are known for their ability to index a vast number of web pages, leading to more comprehensive search results. This difference in indexing capabilities is one of the key factors contributing to the perception that Bing’s search results are inferior.

I hope this gives you a good starting point for your article. I’ve tried to keep the tone conversational and engaging, and I’ve included real-life examples and a storytelling approach where possible. If you need more content to reach your word count, feel free to ask for additional prompts!

Reason #3 – Misinformation

Bing sucks” – again a phrase often heard in discussions about misinformation. But what exactly is misinformation? Misinformation refers to false or inaccurate information, particularly when it’s shared regardless of an intent to mislead. Disinformation, on the other hand, is deliberately misleading or biased information, manipulated narrative or facts, or propaganda.

Search engines play a crucial role in the spread and combat of misinformation. They are the gatekeepers of information, deciding what content reaches the user. When a user enters a query, the search engine’s algorithm determines what information is most relevant and presents it to the user. If the algorithm favors misleading or false information, it can inadvertently contribute to the spread of misinformation.

Several studies have suggested that Bing returns misinformation at a higher rate than other search engines. These studies typically involve entering a set of predetermined search queries into different search engines and then analyzing the top results for accuracy and reliability.

The findings of these studies have been concerning. They suggest that Bing’s search results often include more misinformation than those of other search engines. This could be due to a variety of factors, such as Bing’s algorithm favoring sensational or popular content over accurate and reliable information.

The spread of misinformation can significantly impact user trust and the reputation of a search engine. If users frequently encounter misinformation in their search results, they may lose trust in the search engine and switch to a different one. This can lead to a decline in user numbers and damage the search engine’s reputation.

Reason #4 – User Experience

User experience, or UX, is a crucial aspect of any technology product. It refers to a user’s overall experience when using a product, including how easy it is to use, how it makes the user feel, and how well it meets the user’s needs.

Many criticisms of Bing revolve around its user interface and features. Users often find Bing’s interface less intuitive and user-friendly than other search engines. For example, users have complained about Bing’s image search, which presents images in a collage format that some find confusing and difficult to navigate.

Compared to other search engines, Bing’s user interface and features often fall short. For example, Google’s clean and minimalist design is often praised for its ease of use and intuitive navigation. In contrast, Bing’s design is often seen as cluttered and confusing.

User experience can significantly impact user retention and satisfaction. If users find a search engine difficult to use or if it doesn’t meet their needs, they’re likely to switch to a different search engine. This can lead to a decline in user numbers and damage the search engine’s reputation.

I hope this gives you a good continuation for your article. I’ve tried to keep the tone conversational and engaging, and

I’ve included real-life examples and a storytelling approach where possible. If you need more content to reach your word count, feel free to ask for additional prompts!

Reason #5 – Brand Perception

Branding is a critical aspect of any technology product. It’s not just about a catchy name or a sleek logo; it’s about the overall impression that people have of the product. A strong brand can inspire trust, create an emotional connection, and ultimately drive user loyalty.

Bing’s brand has been a subject of much debate. Some users find the name “Bing” catchy and memorable, while others find it confusing or even silly. The logo, too, has been met with mixed reactions. Some appreciate its simplicity, while others find it uninspiring.

I am Willing to Try Bing, But So Far It Sucks Photo

Compared to other search engine brands, Bing’s brand is often seen as less strong. Google, for example, has a brand that is universally recognized and associated with internet search. Its name has even become a verb in everyday language, a testament to its strong brand.

Brand perception can significantly impact user adoption and loyalty. If users have a negative perception of a brand, they’re less likely to use the product and more likely to switch to a competitor. This can lead to a decline in user numbers and damage the product’s reputation.

Again, I hope this helps with your article. Remember, the key to a great article is to keep it engaging, easy to understand, and unique. Good luck with your writing!

May 1st RSS Awareness Day: Get Involved

rssawareness.gif

Back in 2005 5% of the Internet users said they were using RSS aggregators or XML readers to get the news and other information delivered from blogs and content-rich Web sites as it is posted online (according to the Pew Internet Project).

Feedburner recently reported that they track around 60 million RSS subscribers. Even if we bump that number to 70 million RSS users (counting people that use RSS with other applications or platforms) this would still convert to a meager 5,4% of the Internet users around the world, as of today.

What is the takeaway message? Only a very small percentage of the Internet population is aware of the RSS format and its benefits.

If you have been using RSS (either to syndicate content or to consume it) you know how useful the format is. It allows users to stay connected with different websites and applications, especially those that are updated regularly.

So it is a pity that such a tiny part of the web users are using RSS. The question that came into my mind was: is there anything we can do about it?

Yes, let’s create an RSS Awareness Day!

Objective

The objective of the RSS Awareness Day is to get as many people as possible talking about RSS and its benefits on May 1st. Bloggers and blog readers are already aware of the RSS format, but if enough of them talk about it perhaps the mainstream media will cover it as well, and the general public will get exposed to it.

If people start reading about RSS and how it can help them everywhere, I am sure that some will get curious at least to try it out. Over the time the usage of the format should pick up, and all the Internet users (including content publishers) gain from it.

How to participate

There are several ways to participate (none of them require that you link back here, in fact we will be creating a special site for the event on RSSDay.org):

  1. Blog about it: on May 1st write a post or article on your website about RSS. You can just mention that it is the RSS Awareness Day and link to some RSS resources, or you can explain what RSS is and teach your readers how they can make the most out of RSS. You can even write a poem about RSS, there are no limitations here.
  2. Use a badge or banner: We will be hiring a company (if you wanna help with the badges let us know) to produce several badges and banners that you can use on your site. You can use them throughout April or just on May 1st.
  3. Help spread the word: see the section below.

Help spread the word and win prizes

Since the goal of the project is to get as many people as possible involved, we thought about giving out some prizes to people that will participate. Anyone writing about the RSS Awareness Day or using one of the banners until April 30 (May 1st won’t count cause that is the event itself) will be included on a random draw for the following prizes:

  • 6 $50 cash prizes via Paypal ($300)
  • 3 copies of Landing Page Optimization: The Complete Guide ($300)
  • a 3-month enrollment to the SEOBook training program ($300)
  • 3 single licenses to any iThemes Premium theme ($240)
  • 3 $100 credit vouchers to buy links from TNX ($300)
  • 5 copies of “Killer Domains: How to Find the Perfect Domain Name” ($100)
  • 5 free banner designs from MiniBannersZen ($100)
  • 3 single licenses to the Mimbo Pro Premium theme ($300)

Update: I will be creating a website on RSSDay.org so that everyone can link there on May 1st. I will include information about what is RSS and how people can use it.

Update 2: The prize draw was slightly altered as well. It was prolonger until April 30.

Update 3: I just published a new post updating the list of sponsors.

Test Your Blogging Addiction

Posting, reading, commenting… to many of us, blogging is more than a lifestyle; it’s an addiction. But just how addicted are you compared to everyone else?

According to this test, I’m 70%, although I think it should be a bit higher (the “How many blogs do you read daily?” question doesn’t have a “more than 50? option…). Still, it’s nice to know how I compare.

Test Your Blogging Addiction Photo

The test even gives you a little snippet of code to share your level of blogging addiction with others if you’re so inclined. At the very least, it’s a nice way to pass a day of blogger’s block.

As with any other addiction, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. So level with us; how addicted are you to blogging?

If you are not familiar with it, touch typing is the ability to type with all your fingers and without the need to look at the keyboard as you go. Many people learn it during their school days, but many don’t. Those who don’t tend to use only two fingers to type, and some even need to look for the right key before pressing it.

Until last week I used to type with only two fingers as well. I was not bad with it (averaging 65 words per minute or so), but still I felt that it was necessary to switch to touch typing. Why? Because typing is where we spend most of our time these days, and even small improvements on your typing speed will translate into huge productivity gains.

Suppose that you spend three hours per day typing. That is around 15 hours per work week, 60 hours per month and 720 hours per year. If you increase your typing speed by 30%, you would gain 216 extra hours of work every year. That is a lot.

If you are convinced, here are some resources that I found while trying to learn touch typing. The first one is a test to see how fast you can currently type: speedtest.10-fast-fingers.com. This one is useful to track your progress.

For the learning part I used this site: typeonline.co.uk. It comes with five basic lessons that will teach you the basics of touch typing, including all the finger positions. Each lesson also comes with ten exercises that you can use for practice.

Now the trick is: once you know the positions and can type with all your fingers without looking at the keyboard, albeit slowly, you need to make the switch and never return to typing with two fingers again.

In the beginning you will feel miserable, but this is the only way to go. For example, with two fingers I was able to type 65 words per minute, and as of today with touch typing I am down to 30 words or so. It is a pain, but I am sure that within 2-4 weeks I will be back to 65 words per minute, and hopefully within some months I will be able to increase it to 100 words per minute, which is considered to be pretty fast.

If you are still typing with two fingers, make an effort to learn touch typing. I am sure it will be worth it. For the rest of you guys who already touch type, what is your wpm (words per minute) speed?

8 Solid Entrepreneurship Tips

background image

A couple of days ago Neil Patel posted a very interesting post on his QuickSprout blog, titled 8 Core Beliefs of Extraordinary Entrepreneurs. As usual Neil hits the nail on the head. For instance, here’s the first point, which I think applies to the majority of people, myself included:

Belief #1: Make a decision and go!

This was one of the first lessons I learned when starting my first business and it was extremely hard to get used to making a decision and then taking action on that decision.

I was so afraid I was making a mistake. Since then I’ve learned that making a mistake is not a bad thing. You actually learn from those mistakes, which helps you make better decisions down the road.

You will struggle with hiring and firing people, project budgets, office space and advertising creative. When you first start off in business you will take days and even weeks to answer these questions.

This core belief actually came back to me when I lost a million dollar client. They were happy with the service I was providing, but they wanted to know what else I was going to do to take their business to the next level. I had a few ideas, but I didn’t make a decision on which idea I was going to act on. Long story short, I took too long to make a decision and I lost a $1.2 million client.

The other points are just as interesting/practical, so make sure to set 5 minutes aside and read the full article.

Scientia potentia est. It means “knowledge is power” in Latin. It also means people have known for a long time that the more you know about how the world works, the better off you will be. The more you know about something, the more you’ll be in control.

Now what’s the easiest way to absorb new knowledge? Reading books. Ergo if you want to be in control of your life and to be able to take it in one direction or another, you need to read books, and lots of them.

So far I think pretty much everyone will agree. The problem then becomes, how do we make sure we are reading enough?

I, for one, wasn’t happy with the amount of books I was reading in the previous years. The average was probably 6 to 8 books per year, which I find to be a low number.

Then six months ago or so I decided to try a new strategy: I fixed a number of pages, 30, and I would read that amount every day no matter what. One can read 30 pages in 30 minutes, so it’s something you can easily accommodate into your routine. The only exception was Sunday, which is my day off from all goals, obligations and what not.

I also made sure to always read at the same time (in my case it’s first thing in the morning), which helps to create a habit.

How is it working? Pretty well, as I’ve read 12 books in the past six months, putting the prediction for the whole year at 24 books.

As for what you’ll read I believe that is less important, as sooner or later you’ll come across books with information that will certainly affect your life. I like to mix personal development with technical books. That way I am always trying to improve both personally and professionally.

Bottom line: read those 30 pages every day. If you stick to that habit, in 5 or 10 years you’ll be in much better control of your life.

One Speed Reading Trick That Does Work

Reading is one of the main ways we use to absorb information, and being able to read fast is something that most of us would like. If you could read 100% faster, for instance, you would read twice as many books every year, or the newspaper twice as fast every morning.

The problem is that most speed reading tricks and techniques never work as promised.

This week I came across a video explaining a trick that surprised me though. It takes some time to get used, but once you do I am sure you will feel a tangible increase in the speed that you read. Here is the video:

The basic idea is that you need to stop reading with your larynx (i.e., trying to pronounce each word as you go, even if just mentally) and start reading with your eyes (i.e., the information is processed by the brain immediately as you see it).

Test If A Website Is Down For Everyone or Just For You

Given the amount of people that message me on IM to check if Paypal, their blog or another website is also down for me, I suspect that not every one know this little handy tool. (Not pointing fingers, I used to harass people all the time when my websites went down as well…).

Downforeveryoneorjustme.com will basically perform a quick check to see if the website you are currently seeing down is actually down for everyone else or just for you. This is very useful because sometimes your website will appear to be down, but in reality you might be having ISP or DNS problems, and you are the only person not being able to see it. In those cases, obviously, this tool could help you not to freak out.

I am not really sure how accurate the tool is (this depends on the number of servers they are using, and on their physical distance and IP diversity), but from basic tests I performed it will report the real situation most of the times.

There you go, bookmark it, and the next time you see a website down, just paste the URL there to see what is going on.

So Long Bloglines, Hello Google Reader

background image

I confess I am a little stubborn when it comes to technology and software choices. If something is working fine, I will stick with it, and making me change to another platform will take a lot of effort.

Bloglines, the RSS reader, is a good example. I started using it around four years ago, and it worked just fine for what I needed. Then Google launched Google Reader. I created an account there initially, and even used it for a couple of weeks, but then I returned to Bloglines, because I was used to it.

But then a couple of weeks ago I started noticing an issue: apparently some of the RSS feeds I was subscribed to were not being pulled. Probably it was a small glitch on my account, but it was pretty annoying.

That convinced me to try Google Reader again. So far I am liking it. I still believe Bloglines was faster and simpler to use (two features I highly value on any piece of software), but Google Reader has more features and is more customizable.

What about you guys, what RSS reader do you use? Have you tried many of them before settling down?

The Pomodoro Technique: How a Tomato Could Make You MUCH More Productive https://dailyblogtips.com/the-pomodoro-technique/ https://dailyblogtips.com/the-pomodoro-technique/#comments Mon, 04 May 2020 09:47:38 +0000 The Pomodoro Technique: How a Tomato Could Make You MUCH More Productive Photo

The Pomodoro Technique: How a Tomato Could Make You MUCH More Productive Photo

If you read any productivity or time management blogs, you might have come across the Pomodoro technique before. It’s a great way to focus your attention and get more done.

Here’s how it works in its most basic form:

1. Decide what you’re going to do (e.g. “draft my blog post”).

2. Set a timer for 25 minutes.

3. Work until the time is up: this is one “pomodoro”.

4. Take a 5 minute break, then start your next pomodoro

5. Every 4 “pomodori”, take a longer break.

(There are plenty of online timers like Tomato Timer that are designed for this.)

Most people adjust the technique slightly to suit them: for instance, you might choose to take a longer break after two “pomodori” not every four, especially when you’re starting out.

Why This Method Works

Have you ever sat down to work on a blog post for two hours … only to find yourself tidying your desk, chatting on Twitter, getting distracted by interesting links, or generally wasting time?

Working for timed periods helps keep you on track. When a stray thought comes up and like “I need to send an email” or “I should check whether I had any replies on Twitter” and you can tell yourself that you’ll do it once the timer goes off.

You might find this is an especially useful technique if you’re trying to separate writing from editing: you could write for one pomodoro and see how far you get.

Where the Name Comes From

If this is the first time you’ve come across the pomodoro technique, you might wonder why it’s called that. Pomodoro is Italian for “tomato” and Francesco Cirillo, the inventor of the pomodoro technique, used a tomato-shaped kitchen timer.

There’s a lot of information about the pomodoro technique out there, particularly on dealing with interruptions: if you try the technique out and find it makes you more productive, do a bit of research into ways to take it even further.

Your challenge: Try the pomodoro technique today and or next time you blog and and see how you get on. Drop a comment below to tell us how it went.

Discover KeepMeOut: Your Guide to Controlling Web Distractions & Internet Addiction in 2024 Photo

KeepMeOut: For many of us, that phrase has become a mantra, a digital safeguard whispered into the echo chamber of our internet-addicted lives. The rabbit hole of endless scrolling, the constant chimes of notifications – distractions are everywhere. And they’re not just annoying; they’re productivity killers.

Discover KeepMeOut: Your Guide to Controlling Web Distractions & Internet Addiction in 2024 Photo

As the Internet becomes almost ubiquitous, more and more people are starting to have addiction problems.  If you are a teen or a student, this can already be a problem. If you are a worker or an online entrepreneur, this can be an even bigger problem, because it will hurt your productivity and possibly your bottom line. How to solve the problem? I believe that the most efficient way is to stop, think, and try to become more disciplined over time. If that is not working, however, you can try a small tool that I came across: KeepMeOut -As of 2024, the service is no longer in operational, but keep reading because I will provide you with alternatives.

The KeepMeOut Experience: Using The Tool

Setting up KeepMeOut was straightforward:

  1. Enter the URL of the website you want to avoid.
  2. Set the frequency of visits (for example, once every 60 minutes).
  3. Create a bookmark for the generated KeepMeOut link.
  4. Use this bookmark every time you want to visit the website. Simple but effective.

The tool was beneficial, offering digital self-control on a platter. However, there were downsides. Savvy users could bypass the block, and it relied heavily on user honesty and commitment.

I’m sure many of you have experienced the feeling of being sucked into the digital world, consumed by the never-ending cycle of scrolling through social media or playing video games for hours on end. It can be easy to get caught up in the convenience and entertainment the internet provides, but it’s important to remember that the internet can be addictive.

A study conducted few years ago revealed that 6% of the world’s population was struggling with internet addiction, and this was concerning since that time only 39% of the global population had access to the internet. Today you can imagine how rampant the problem is and might be affecting someone we know.

Getting Unaddicted to Technology – Discover a Life Unplugged

As someone who has struggled with internet addiction myself, I can tell you that breaking the habit can be tough. But it’s worth it! Here are some ways that have helped me in my journey to break free from internet addiction

Make a strict plan

Creating and sticking to a plan is key to breaking any habit, and internet addiction is no different. Setting specific times for when you will allow yourself to use the internet is essential for breaking this habit. You can do this by scheduling a time for logging on and a time for logging off.

For example, you might decide to only use the internet for an hour after dinner, or to only check social media once a day. Whatever your plan is, make sure it’s specific and that you follow it consistently. If possible, ask your partner or family members to be accountable and remind you in case you are diverting from your schedule. Doing this can help you manage your time more efficiently and make better progress towards meeting your goals of breaking an internet addiction.

Below is a sample schedule you can use to limit your on-screen hours. Notice how the hours have decreased to just over three throughout the day.

Time Slot
On-Screen Hours
Activity
8:00 AM – 10:00 AM
0 – 1
Get dressed, have your breakfast, and start the day
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
0
Attend online classes, do homework, or go for a run
12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
1
Take a break and do some physical activity or exercise
2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
0
Read a book, discover new hobbies, and indulge yourself
4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
1
If tired, go for a nap or spend time with family members
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
0 – 1
Listen to music, go to the gym, or do a relaxing activity
8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
0
Have dinner and spend time with family or friends or your partner
10:00 PM – 12:00 AM
1
Get ready for bed and wind down for the night

Remember to set limits on your internet usage and take breaks to engage in other activities. It’s also important to communicate with your family and friends about your goals to reduce your internet addiction, as they can support and encourage you in your efforts.

Socialize

One of the benefits of being online is the ability to connect with others, but it’s important to remember that there are other ways to socialize as well. Try to set aside time for face-to-face interaction with friends and family, whether it’s going for a walk, having a meal together, or just chatting.

Here’s how socializing is essential when it comes to breaking internet addiction.

  • Socializing can provide a sense of connection and fulfillment that may be lacking when relying on the internet for social interaction.
  • Spending time with others can help to take the focus off the internet and provide a distraction from the urge to spend excessive amounts of time online.
  • Engaging in activities with others, such as sports, hobbies, or other shared interests, can provide a sense of purpose and accomplishment that may be lacking when spending too much time on the internet.

Socialization provides an opportunity to engage with others without the distractions that come with being online; you get a chance to truly take in what someone else is saying and develop meaningful relationships.

Turn off notifications

Notifications can be a huge distraction, constantly pulling us back to our screens and away from our family and friends. We’re constantly bombarded with notifications, reminders, and alerts that pull us back in and keep us hooked.

To help break this internet addiction, the first step is to turn off notifications on all devices including phones, laptops, and tablets. Doing this will reduce the number of distractions we face throughout the day as notification alerts can often pull our attention away from more important tasks. To help break the cycle, it’s important to take turn off notifications that aren’t essential.

Turning off notifications helps to create a healthy balance between time spent online and time spent offline with friends or family. It takes away the temptation to go on social media when we receive an alert or message which helps us focus more on what matters in life rather than getting sucked into a cycle of scrolling through news feeds or checking emails every few minutes.

Change Communication Patterns

Many of us use the internet as our primary means of communication, so if you find yourself spending too much time online, it’s time to switch things up. Start calling or texting people instead of messaging them over the internet.

Also, try to limit your communication with others to specific times of the day, rather than being constantly available. Doing this mean setting aside specific times to check your emails or social media, rather than constantly refreshing these apps throughout the day.

Keep devices unavailable

For those trying to stop internet addiction, the most effective strategy is often the simplest: keep devices unavailable or out of reach. Putting aside devices that provide access to the internet such as laptops, and smartphones might be tricky, but it’s essential to keeping your internet addiction in check.

Here are two easy ways to do it.

  • Keep devices out of reach: Consider keeping your devices in a place where they are not easily accessible, such as in a drawer or in a room that you don’t spend much time in.
  • Create a designated device-free zone: Consider setting aside a specific area of your home where you will not use your devices, such as a bedroom or living room.

Additionally, those seeking to break their addiction can also delete social media apps from their phones or block certain websites on their computers. It is important to remember that breaking an addiction takes time, so do not be discouraged if your progress is slow.

Find activities outside

It’s important to realize that there is life outside of the internet and to find activities that can be enjoyed away from screens. Taking up a new hobby or engaging in physical activity are just some of the ways that people can break free from internet addiction. It may seem like finding something else to do apart from being online is difficult, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

Starting small can make the process easier; reading a book or going for a walk are simple tasks that can bring enjoyment. Picking up an old hobby or starting something completely new could also help people focus their attention away from the internet and onto other things they enjoy doing in their free time.

Additionally, setting goals and tracking progress can help to keep individuals motivated and on track. By relearning how to pass the time without the internet, individuals can take back control of their lives and become more productive.

Use time-monitoring apps

Time-monitoring apps can provide insight into which websites are frequently visited, as well as show the total hours per day and week that have been spent browsing the web. They also provide other data that can be used to help recognize when addictive behavior begins and how it can be broken down into manageable steps to achieve a healthier balance between online and offline activities.

Discover KeepMeOut: Your Guide to Controlling Web Distractions & Internet Addiction in 2024 Photo

Additionally, they can provide insights into how much time is spent on certain applications, allowing users to gain awareness of their internet usage habits. With these insights, users can make informed decisions about where to cut back and adjust their behavior accordingly. Furthermore, many time monitoring apps have features such as notifications for when time limits are reached and pause functions, which can help create healthy habits and reduce internet addiction.

Some of the best time-tracking apps include

  • Harvest.
  • TimeCamp.
  • Clockify.

Seek Therapy

Professional therapy can be an effective way of dealing with internet addiction, allowing individuals to take control of their online habits and break away from Internet addiction. Therapy helps people understand why they are struggling with compulsive use of the Internet and how to address it in healthy ways.

It also provides tools that can help individuals develop healthier relationships with technology, manage their time more effectively, and learn new coping mechanisms for stress or anxiety.

Therapy sessions may involve cognitive-behavioral interventions such as exploring new interests or activities outside the digital realm, developing goals that don’t involve technology, and learning how to manage triggers that lead to excessive internet use.

Looking Beyond KeepMeOut: Alternative Tools

With KeepMeOut currently inactive, it’s essential to explore other digital productivity tools:

  • StayFocusd
StayFocusd is a Google Chrome extension designed to limit your time on distracting websites. You list the sites that distract you and set a daily time limit for them. Once you’ve used up your time, the extension blocks those sites for the rest of the day. You can customize active days and hours, and choose to block entire sites or specific content. A ‘Nuclear Option’ blocks all listed sites for a certain period, regardless of your daily limit. The downsides? It’s only for Chrome, and you can technically bypass it by switching browsers or devices. Ultimately, it’s a useful tool, but you’re still responsible for your own productivity.
  • SelfControl
SelfControl is a productivity app available for macOS users. It lets you block access to distracting websites, mail servers, or anything else on the internet. You set a period of time, add websites to your “blacklist” and start the timer. During that time, you can’t access those sites, even if you restart your computer or delete the application. It’s an effective, no-nonsense tool for those who want to eliminate distractions and focus on work. However, it’s only available for macOS users, and like any tool, it’s most effective when used with discipline and commitment to productivity.

These alternative tools operate similarly to KeepMeOut, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Here is a comparison:

Feature
StayFocusd
SelfControl
Platform
Google Chrome
macOS
Function
Limits time on distracting websites
Blocks access to distracting websites
Customization
High: Sites, subdomains, content
Medium: Sites
Nuclear Option
Yes
Yes, default setting
Active Hours Setting
Yes
No
Reset
Resets daily at midnight
Resets at end of set period
Bypass Prevention
None
Cannot be bypassed even with system restart or app deletion
Pros
High customization, active hours setting
Full block of distracting sites, cannot be bypassed
Cons
Only for Chrome, can be bypassed
Only for macOS, no active hours setting

The pros of StayFocusd include its high level of customization and the ability to set active hours. The cons are its exclusivity to Google Chrome and the potential for users to bypass the restrictions.

For SelfControl, the pros include a complete block of distracting sites that cannot be bypassed, even by deleting the app or restarting the system. However, the cons are that it’s available only for macOS, and it lacks the ability to set active hours.

Keep in mind that Internet addiction is a rapidly growing phenomenon that has serious implications on the mental and physical health of a person. The negative effects of excessive internet use on our relationships are clear, and it is up to each of us to make the conscious decision to prioritize our offline lives and well-being.

I encourage you to take a step back and assess your own internet usage. Are you spending too much time online, and neglecting your responsibilities or relationships because of your internet habits? If so, it is time to make a change. Don’t wait until it is too late to address this issue.

There are many helpful resources out there to help you on your journey. Don’t hesitate any longer, act now and take control of your life.

On some occasions you might want or need to convert a website or a specific web page into a PDF document. For example, if you came across a really interesting article that you want to save locally in your computer for future reference.

html website to pdf convert
There is a really efficient web tool for that purpose called HTML-PDF-Converter. You just need to type the URL of the website or page, and in a matter of seconds a download window will open asking where you want to save the PDF document. The quality is pretty good, too.

Alexa is Becoming Completely Worthless

Alexa is becoming a joke lately. Some people claim that over the previous two years it was already losing reliability, but lately it went completely nuts. Whatever they did on the last algorithm update, it messed up their rankings badly.

I know that many people already ignore Alexa, but most advertisers still consider it when evaluate ad buys on websites, so I think we need to raise the awareness about it, and encourage them to use other available tools to gauge traffic.

The problem emerges when you make comparisons of different websites, and when you bring into the picture other traffic tracking services like Compete.com or Google Trends. I have 5 interesting cases to illustrate this.

Case 1: Daily Blog Tips vs. Daily Writing Tips

This was a natural example since I own both sites and have access to the real traffic figures. Daily Writing Tips (as of today) has an Alexa rank of 91059. Daily Blog Tips has a rank of 112363. The Alexa graph of the reach of both sites tell a similar story:

Alexa is Becoming Completely Worthless Photo

So if one was to trust Alexa, he would conclude that Daily Writing Tips is getting a lot more traffic than Daily Blog tips right? Wrong!

In fact it is exactly the opposite, Daily Blog Tips generates around 15,000 daily page views, while Daily Writing Tips only 8,000. The proportion of unique visitors is similar.

Now the interesting thing is that both Compete.com and Google Trends show a very similar traffic trend for those two sites, and one that is much closer to the real numbers.

Alexa is Becoming Completely Worthless Photo

The time frame of the graphs is different, but it should not matter. The Alexa graph is displaying the trend for the past 6 months, while Compete and Google are displaying it for the past 1 year.

Case 2: PhotoshopStar vs. VentureBeat

PhotoshopStar is a photoshop blog created by a friend of mine. It has around 2,500 RSS subscribers and gets some decent traffic. As of today it has an Alexa rank of 30,422. VentureBeat, on the other hand, is one of the most popular technology and web 2.0 blogs on the web, with tens of thousands of RSS subscribers. It is Alexa rank is 31,397. Hmmm. This would mean that PhotoshopStar gets more traffic than VentureBear? Check out the Alexa graph:

Now what would you think if I tell you that PhotoshopStar gets around 300,000 monthly page views (source is my friend), while VentureBeat gets over 1,000,000 (source is Federated Media)? Alexa must be kidding right? Not only that, but again both Compete.com…

and Google Trends managed to display a more realistic situation.

Case 3: JohnChow vs. Techmeme

JohnChow.com is a popular “make money online” blog. According to John himself his blog generates around 300,000 monthly page views, and its current Alexa rank is 58,000. You probably also know Techmeme, a tech news aggregator. Its Alexa rank is 73,938. Again, one would expect that Johnchow.com is receiving a lot more traffic than Techmeme if he was to follow what Alexa says right?

Alexa is Becoming Completely Worthless Photo

Well this is probably far from the truth. Techmeme must be getting at least twice as much traffic as JohnChow.com. Both compete…

and Google Trends in fact are showing a very similar pattern, where Techmeme has by far more traffic than JohnChow.com.

Case 4: BloggingTips vs. Copyblogger

BloggingTips is a meta blogging site, with around 2,500 RSS subscribers, and its current Alexa rank is 103,872. Copyblogger, on the other hand, is the authority copywriting blog on the web, and counts more than 40,000 RSS subscribers. Oddly enough, Alexa ranks Copyblogger right aside with BloggingTips, with a rank of 102,259.

Over the last month Copyblogger shows a spike on Alexa, but still you can see that was going hand in hand with BloggingTips for a while. Do they really receive a similar traffic? I highly doubt so, and the Compete.com traffic report confirms that.

Google Trends shows a trend to both websites that is very similar to Compete.com (that is, the BloggingTips traffic is so small in comparison to Copyblogger that it is not showing in the graph).

Case 5: PSDTuts vs. DZone

Someone could think that the crazy Alexa rankings covered above were due to websites coming from different niches. Well let’s take two on the same niche then: web design.

PSDTuts is one of the most popular blogs with photoshop tutorials. It is current Alexa rank is an impressive 11,957. DZone.com, on the other hand, is a popular social bookmarking site for web designers and developers. One would expect that the latter would have a higher traffic right? Not for Alexa… which is giving a rank of 23,233 to DZone.

Alexa is Becoming Completely Worthless Photo

Compete.com is telling a whole different story though…

Alexa is Becoming Completely Worthless Photo

And so is Google Trends. Yet another time both of those traffic tracking services are agreeing with each other, and completely disagreeing with Alexa.

Conclusion

As you can see, on all those 5 cases Alexa was reporting very strange traffic trends. Sometimes it reported the opposite of the real situation. I am pretty sure it would be easy to find 10 or 100 more similar cases.

Compete.com and Google Trends, on the other hand, are behaving very similarly, and judging by the numbers that I know, they appear to be far closer to the real situation.

In my opinion the only factor that makes people still consider Alexa is its ranking system. People like rankings. They like to compare A with B and C. Compete.com and Google Trends still need to develop such a continual ranking system (right now you can only do on-spot comparisons).

Should they come up with such a ranking system, though, I am not sure how many people would still look at the Alexa numbers.

Do You Really Need to go to the University?

background image

If you want to work on the Internet or to be an entrepreneur, I really don’t think you need to.

I always tell my friends that if I had the mind that I have today (in terms of knowing what I want to do, and what knowledge and tools I need to do that) five years ago, I would not have enrolled myself in the university.

At the time I had no clue where I was going, however, so getting a degree seemed like the smartest choice. Everyone else was doing it, after all!

I studied International Economics because it was a pretty eclectic degree, and it would allow me to work on virtually any business segment. Then 18 months ago I started working on the Internet with my own websites and with other entrepreneurial projects, and I guess I have being using 5% of what I learned in the university, if that.

Now the main argument of the university proponents is that apart from the knowledge itself, which you might or might not use later on, passing all those years studying will teach you how to gather, analyze and present information. It will give you a framework, upon which you will build on.

That is true, the university will give you that, but I don’t think that a person that starts working straight out of high school would lose that. He would also learn how to gather, analyze and present information, and he would also gain a framework, but those would come from real working experience rather than from theoretical classes and lectures.

I honestly think that if I had spent the same years that I did in the university working with my own projects and trying to make a living online, I would have learned much more (and that knowledge would have been practical rather than theoretical).

Again, this is valid only for certain classes of professionals. If you want to be a doctor or a civil engineer there is no alternative to going to the university and learning what you need to there.

Another downside of universities is that they focus on giving you knowledge, rather than making you develop competencies and attitudes. The latter two are immensely more important for your professional success.

I wrote about this sometime ago, on an article titled Knowledge, Competencies and Attitudes). Summing it up: Knowledge is practical information gained through learning, experience or association (e.g., second degree equations). Competencies, on the other hand, refer to the ability to perform specific tasks (e.g., the ability to communicate effectively). Attitudes involve how people react to certain situations and how they behave in general (e.g., whether you are proactive, arrogant, if you get along with people and so on).

Here is an example that I used to illustrate why competencies and attitudes are more important than knowledge:

Consider two different men, John and Mark, working for a financial services company. Both of them are eager to succeed so that they spend lots of time trying to grow professionally.

John uses his time gaining as much knowledge as possible: he studies balance sheets, financial reports, accounting practices and the like. He even takes related courses on the local university.

Mark, on the other hand, gets only the knowledge that is necessary to carry out his job. Other than that, he uses his time to improve his writing skills, his ability to solve problems, his ability to understand and empathize with other people and so on.

Should the financial services sector enter a downturn some day forcing both men to find another job, who do you think will have a harder time? Yeah, I am sure you have guessed it.

As you can see I am not arguing that you don’t need to go to the university because you will learn everything working. You will still need to study and go through the pain of learning and improving yourself. The only difference is that if you do this on your own you will be able to focus on the competencies and attitudes that you know you need to develop.

The knowledge that a university will give you is available for everyone, anywhere in the world. Sure, there is a difference between knowledge and information. but with the right motivation and some help from other people even a kid in Sri Lanka can absorb the information available online and transform it into knowledge.

So what should your strategy be? Focus on developing the right attitudes and competencies, and grab the necessary knowledge as you go.

10 Simple Productivity Tips for Bloggers

Productivity itself is pretty unimportant. It’s what productivity allows us to do that matters. A productive blogging habit means more posts and more quality, and we all know what that means: more links and more traffic.

adblindness.jpg

Productive blogging can also affect our day-to-day lives. It allows you to accomplish more in less time. That means: more time spent with the people that matter in your life.

Many bloggers, myself included, struggle to balance the needs of this hobby with the needs of our loved ones. Being productive can make that task a little bit easier.

Luckily for us, productivity isn’t complicated: it’s mainly based in common sense. The tough part is in being dedicated enough to change our bad habits and be productive, rather than simply reading about it. This post provides ten simple tips to help you start.

1. Write more than you publish. This seems counter-intuitive, but there’s a compelling reason to write, say, one post a week more than you publish. In a month, you should have enough posts saved up to run your blog on autopilot for a week, or to use on days when you’re feeling unproductive.

Productivity, like creativity, can be cyclical. It’s a good idea to write more than you need when you’re feeling particularly productive, to tide you over on days when you’re not. You might even save up enough posts to take a blogging holiday!

2. Turn off auto-notifiers. Whether it be Twitter, Email or Facebook your productivity will suffer if you’re frequently interrupted. When notified that you have a new message or email it’s hard to resist the temptation to read it as soon as you receive it. This will interrupt your frame of mind. Focus is something you develop over time, meaning frequent interruptions will hamper your ability to focus.

Let’s face it: you’ll never receive a message that can’t wait a few hours. Auto-notifiers are more trouble than they’re worth.

3. Check email less, deal with more. If you only check emails once or twice a day you’ll be able to respond to all emails within 12 or 24 hours, respectively. No-once could fault your for that. They key is to check emails less but process more. A good tip is to keep only emails that require action in your inbox. When you do check your email, take action on all the emails in your inbox until it’s empty. This isn’t a new idea. That’s because it works!

4. Write multiple posts when you’re feeling creative. You need to develop a writing schedule that works with your mental state. Are there certain times of the day or week when you’re most creative? Focus on writing during those times, even if it means writing multiple posts in one sitting. You’ll write better and faster.

If creativity is sporadic for you, make your writing schedule flexible. If you follow tip one and build a safety net of content, you won’t need to worry if, at times, the inspiration doesn’t come. You’ll always be more productive when you’re inspired.

5. Use your feed reader as an all-purpose inbox. A lot of time is wasted logging in to various web 2.0 services, checking statuses, updates and stats. Where possible, add these things to your feed reader. You can subscribe to your inbound links at Technorati, pages from your blog submitted to Digg (search your blog’s URL and subscribe to the feed) and a number of other services. Use your imagination! Then, when you go through your feed reader, you can perform a few different tasks in one go.

6. Process different tasks in batches. Most of us take hundreds of scattered actions throughout the day: check email, check Twitter, moderate a comment, read some feeds, check stats, and so on. This prevents us from becoming focused and tapping into any kind of flow state.

Think of your various actions like driving a car. You won’t drive very fast if you’re constantly shifting gears up and down at random. You want transitions between gears to be smooth and only occur when it’s necessary.

The same can be said for mental states. Processing different kinds of tasks in batches will allow you to focus on each type of task to the best of your abilities. You could read feeds, emails, comments and anything else you can think of in batches.

7. Develop a ‘To Post’ list. Sometimes we spend so much time trying to decide what we should do that nothing at all gets done. Luckily, it’s not too hard to change that habit.

Designate a day where you set out your posting schedule: what you’re going to post about and when. You’ll know what posts you have to write and how long you have to get them done.

8. Keep a reserve of post ideas. Blogger’s block is the arch nemesis of productivity. There are two key things you can do to cope with blogger’s block: accept it and fall back on content you’ve saved, or delve into your reserves of ideas.

It’s essential that every blogger have a healthy supply of post ideas saved up. It will minimize the amount of creative work you have to do when you sit down to write a post. Rather than having to innovate and be original (which can be hard sometimes), you simply have to write.

9. Spend less time reading feeds. You don’t want to spend more time reading other people’s content than you do creating your own. Cutting down your feed subscriptions seems like the obvious answer to this problem, but it could mean that you miss out on important lessons and ideas.

You need to become skilled at quickly deciding which posts will be worth your time and which posts will not. Scanning is another habit that will help you here. Do you want to know the secret to lightning-fast feed reading?

10. Sketch out your posts before filling in the detail. Another important place to save time is on how long you spend writing posts. A key mistake I see bloggers make is trying to write a publishable post the first time through. Trying to go from nothing to perfect is a sure-fire way to have you wringing your hands over every sentence.

One strategy I find works well for me is to divide each post into its key points and write them down. For example, when I started writing this post it only contained the sentences in bold. I fleshed out each point with the following paragraph, then wrote the introduction last.

Dividing each post into manageable chunks and tackling it one portion at a time can help structure your writing and make the whole process less intimidating.

Points to review

  • Write more than you publish.
  • Turn off auto-notifiers.
  • Check emails less often, but deal with more when you do.
  • Write as much as possible when you’re feeling creative.
  • Use your feed reader as an all-in-one inbox.
  • Process different types of tasks in batches.
  • Work out a ‘To Post’ list.
  • Spend less time reading feeds.
  • Sketch posts before filling in the detail.

Over to you
