Twitter is a marketing bomb if used the right way. I have been using twitter for more than 2 years now and have been benefited only when I discovered the right way to use it.

Just like many of us I usually blindly do 2 things:

  1. Blindly follow as many as suggested twitter accounts to follow.
  2. Blindly tweet every single post on my blog using the retweet plugins.

I can for sure say these two are the biggest mistakes that could get your cracker wet.

The major pattern you could see on Twitter is:

  • You get followed back by many if you follow them
  • People subscribe to auto-follow tools to increase the follower counts
  • Your Twitter dashboard is flooded with tweets if you leave it un touched for 10 minutes
  • As soon as you tweet you see few new visitors from twitter landing on your website / blog

Is that what Twitter is all about – a few extra visitors, lot of blind tweets, flooded dashboards and huge chunk of followers to show off?

Now let me share what I learnt the hard way and something that could really help you benefit.person holding black smartphone

I created another twitter account and followed a different strategy that the one I used to use and many of us still use.

I had the new Ground rules this time:

  • Only follow who I really wanted to
  • Will try to keep the follower to following ratio unequal
  • Have a straight forward profile Bio (simple words about me and what I do)
  • Have a real profile pic (preferably not a graphic unless you are a huge brand)
  • Respond to direct messages
  • Visit / Reply to interesting tweets and if good, re-tweet.
  • Meet / interact with real people and build contacts
  • How this was different from my previous approach

With my old profile even though I had 8000+ followers on a retweet I used to get 120 -150 new hits on my blog posts. Then what are the 7850 followers for? Spamming you? I guess you have got the message I am trying to send across.Twitter website on desktop

Twitter is all about real people and real contacts – build them and you would be rewarded.

  • When to DM: Timing is everything. If you’re reaching out to someone you don’t know, consider their time zone and working hours. It’s respectful and increases the chances of a swift reply.
  • What to DM: Keep it professional and polite, especially in initial communications. Your first DM can set the tone for all future interactions, so make it count!
  • DM etiquette: Just like in any other form of communication, etiquette is important. Don’t spam, don’t harass, and always be respectful.

My personal opinions are slightly different from his when it comes to Twitter followers vs. RSS subscribers (because I think the latter are more important for a blogger or web publisher), but I am always open to different perspectives and points of view. I am also curious to know which one you guys value more, so make sure to drop a comment after you read the article.

You may be aware that Twitter is the newest phenomenon in the blogoshpere. Big name bloggers have been jumping on the Twitter bandwagon for months, and many have effectively leveraged the micro-blogging service to increase readership, while at the same time using it to develop new relationships. The great thing about Twitter is that is helps you develop that two-way relationship that RSS lacks.

Having that Feedburner chicklet increase by a few hundred readers definitely feels good. The more subscribers you have, the more influence you have as a blogger. But I would assert that a new Twitter follower is far more valuable than a new RSS subscriber. Here’s why:

1. Twitter followers see your broadcasts

Although some people will tell you that using Twitter as a broadcasting service is wrong, but I disagree. Many people PREFER their friends let them know of a new blog post via Twitter. I may not always have my feed reader open, but I keep Twitterific in the corner of my monitor all day. When someone announces a new blog post on Twitter, I will very often click and read it.

2. Twitter followers can become your friends

The thing that Twitter offers that an RSS reader can’t is the ability to respond. Sure, there is always the comment section, but you’re far more likely to get a response from a blog author on Twitter than in their comments. Twitter is conversational, and thus Twitter users like to use the tool to converse.

3. Twitter friends can become your fans

Friendship means trust, and people who trust you are far more likely to become fans. Ultimately, fans are what you want.

The way a blogger gets to be influential, and thus make money, is by figuring out a way to get people to use their influence (no matter how small) to promote you. People who like you enough to do this are valuable, and Twitter is the perfect tool to cultivate these fans.

4. Twitter followers are usually testing you

I give my blog readers three options when they visit my blog.

  1. Subscribe to my RSS feed
  2. Subscribe via Email
  3. Follow me on Twitter

The reason I added that third option is because I suspected many people were coming to my blog, enjoying my content, but couldn’t justify adding another blog to their list of daily reads. For these people, I needed to give them an option that let them gradually get to know me. If they enjoyed conversing with me, or reading my tweets, then they are likely to click a “New Blog Post” broadcast when I tweet them, as well.

And since I use Woopra Analytics, I am able to watch the instant results of tweeting a new blog post to these followers. It’s amazing to see the “Live” number shoot up instantaneously.

5. Twitter followers can become RSS subscribers too

During the time since I added the third “Follow me on Twitter” option, I’ve seen my RSS subscriber numbers almost double. I certainly can’t give credit to Twitter for all of them (I worked my tail off in October to increase subscribers), I can say that I do believe Twitter helped tremendously as a part of my overall subscription and traffic increase strategy.

In the cases where Twitter followers and RSS subscribers overlap, consider yourself lucky. You’ve just made a new friend, and a new subscriber.

I found his post interesting because that trend is something I have been noticing myself. It looks like for many people social media is the collection of social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook and Twitter.

Well, it is much more than that.

Social media are the various forms of user generated content and the collection of websites and applications that enables people to interact and share information online.

Social Bookmarking Sites Love Blogs, After All

If you wander around Digg and other social bookmarking sites, you will notice a slight discrimination against blogs (or so it appears at first glance). Many blogging-related stories get buried automatically. The ones that make it to the front page often receive harsh comments along the “who cares about blogs anyway” fashion.

Those episodes made me curious, so I decided to dig a little deeper. The question that I wanted to answer was: how popular are blogs within social bookmarking sites? More specifically: what percentage of “popular” stories are coming from blogs? The results were surprising.

The Methodology

First of all I selected three social bookmarking sites to include on the research: Digg, Delicious and Stumble Upon. The next step was to actually define what would be considered a blog, and what would not.

In order to be considered a blog, the website needed to meet 2 out of the 3 criteria that follow:

  • It runs on blogging-specific software
  • It has a comment section
  • Its content is structured chronologically

Obviously there were some gray areas. Some mainstream publications, for instance, are starting to adopt comments on their websites. They also structure the content chronologically, meaning that they could be considered blogs. But they were not.

That said, blogs of mainstream publications were considered as such. While anything coming from www.wired.com, was not considered, stories coming from blogs.wired.com were considered to be blogs.

The actual research consisted of monitoring the top stories (front page stories from Digg, popular stories from Delicious and “stumbled” pages from StumbleUpon) for 10 days. All the URLs of the counted stories were saved.

The number of stories counted each day is variable for the first two social bookmarking sites (since you can not control it) and fixed for StumbleUpon (since you can control how many pages you “stumble” daily). Below you will find the results.

Digg

Surprisingly enough (at least for me) Digg revealed itself to be the most blog-friendly social bookmarking site among the three. Throughout the 10 days, over 54% of the front page stories came from blogs.

This could be explained by the large number of popular blogs (e.g., Gizmodo, Engadget, Lifehacker and TechCrunch) that have a readership very active on Digg.

Alternatively, since Digg is the site that generates more traffic for featured stories, one could argue that bloggers “aim” for Digg when creating and promoting their content.

Delicious

Delicious was the most balanced site. Consider that 3 days out of 10 presented more stories coming from blogs. On average, 45,7% of the stories that appeared on the “Popular” page of the social bookmarking site were coming from blogs.

Again, even if this number is not as big as the Digg one, we can say that blogs represent a corner-stone for Delicious users.

StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon had unexpected number as well, but in the opposite direction as those of Digg. There was no single day where the number of “stumbled” pages coming from blogs surpassed the the number non-blog ones.

On average, 32,7% of the served pages were coming from blogs. Maybe the results are biased due to the fact that they are coming from my personal stumble activity, and not from the Stumble Buzz page. I am working on the latter and will update the results shortly.

Bear in mind that these results might deviate from the actual popularity of blogs within the mentioned social bookmarking sites (even because said popularity changes over the time). I am already working on extending the period of the research to 30 days in order to confirm the results.

On average, 54,1% of Digg‘s front page stories were coming from blogs, 45,7% of Delicious popular stories were coming from blogs and 32,7% of StumbleUpon stumbled pages were blogs.

Regardless of the peculiar characteristics of each social bookmarking site, the numbers were higher than what I was expecting. There are 15 million active blogs in the world, which is a fraction of the active “traditional” websites.

Perhaps there is a widespread misconception regarding the popularity of blogs. In this case, it seems that the facts trump opinions; blogs are more popular and credible than people think.

By default, your Facebook page’s URL is made up of your page’s name plus a long number. If you want to put the URL on your business card, or spell it out over the phone, this is obviously not ideal.

The good news is that you can create a custom URL (sometimes called a “vanity URL”) with a username and no number, like this:

I’ll take you through the process step by step, showing you how to create a unique web address for your Facebook page. A custom URL not only gives your page a more professional appearance, it also enhances your brand’s recognition on Facebook. So let’s get started.

What Exactly is a Custom URL?

A custom URL is a unique web address for your Facebook page. Instead of the default series of random characters assigned by Facebook, a custom URL is a unique and memorable link that reflects the identity of your page.

I can change my existing custom URL by following a similar process:

  1. Go to the “Username” Settings: I open my page’s settings and find the “Username” section.
  2. Check if I Can Change My URL: Before changing my URL, I check if my page is eligible for a URL change according to Facebook’s rules.

1. Have a meaningful channel name with target keywords. Use capitalization in the channel name so that it is clear. If you are starting a YouTube channel about cats, CuteCatsDaily is a better channel name than catschannel1987

2. Enter a title for the channel. By default your channel name is also the title of the channel but you can edit it in channel settings. Have your keywords in this channel for search optimization. Note that this channel title is in H1 tag – good for SEO.

3. Enter a link to your website in your channel. YouTube allows adding more than one link in your channel’s sidebar.

4. When uploading videos, enter the tags carefully. Enter low competition keywords. These keywords can be found out from AdWords Keyword tool. You can also enter tags from competing videos so that your videos will appear as related videos when those videos are watched.

5. If you are creating infomovies (videos with slides and voiceover) using PowerPoint or Keynote, make sure that you have a custom unique background for your slides. This custom background can contain your website’s URL on the top right corner or bottom right corner. With this technique you can gain visitors even if your video is embedded on other sites in which case your description and the link in it will not appear.

6. If you are making screencast videos, try to record the screen at 640×360 (16:9) so that the videos do not appear fuzzy. If you can’t do it in 360p, you can make it at 480p (854×480). Do not upload screencast videos in 720p unless you have no other option.

7. Use annotations in your video. Have a specific call to action in the annotation. You can link to subscribe page, channel page, another YouTube video or just ask the visitor to visit your URL for more information. Note that you can use only YouTube internal links in annotations, external linking is not allowed.

8. Make use of YouTube trends. You can create videos for your niche related to the trending videos and get a good number of eyeballs on your videos. Visit YouTube-trends.Blogspot.com (YouTube’s official blog) to see the latest trending videos.

9. Upload high quality videos consistently to keep your users engaged and YouTube happy.

10. Do not be too aggressive with marketing on YouTube. If you upload a sales video and wonder why it hasn’t gone viral, it is time to understand that YouTube is a content website. Deliver good content and then ask people to visit your website.

11. Try to get your face on the camera as much as possible. You can create talking head videos in a batch. Allot 1 or 2 days in a month for video creation and create 5-10 videos in 1 go. You may want to shoot those videos in different costume each time.

12. Do not upload 10 minute long videos. Attention span of users in YouTube is very low. In my experience 1-2 minute videos work best for YouTube. Deliver a short but powerful message. If you have something significant to say, break up the video into 2-5 parts and upload them with unique Keyword rich titles. This way you will get more viewers to your video and viewers can skip parts of your video if not interested. Make sure to link these parts of the video using annotations. However please keep in mind that this is recommended but not a rule. There are exceptions. I have 10-15 minute video going well on YouTube and a lot of others have too.

13. Controversial videos attract a lot of attention on YouTube. However make sure to provide some quality content after you attract the viewers using you controversial title.

14. Spend some time everyday on leaving useful comments in related videos. If your comments are liked, it will be on top and a lot of visitors will click on your username and land on your channel.

15. Every video you upload is eligible to be a video response to some video. Find some related videos in your niche and if appropriate, post a video response using one of your videos.

16. Have a separate Google account for your YouTube channel so that even if your account gets banned, your other services are not affected.

7 Ways to Make Your Posts Pop on Social Media

As a marketing tool, blogging is still very much alive and kicking. Case in point: In a study by Social Media Examiner, 58 percent of marketers rank written content as their No. 1 priority on social media. Meanwhile, 68 percent plan to blog more than they do now in the coming years.

Considering what blogging does for businesses, those stats make sense. According to Hubspot, companies that blog bring in more website visitors, more inbound links, more indexed pages and more leads per month than those that don’t. Of course, this is assuming the blogs in question are:

  • High-quality
  • Able to get readers to take a desired course of action
  • Well-represented on social media

By now, you already know how to do No. 1 and No. 2. In this post, I’ll discuss No. 3: aka how to draw eyeballs to your blogs in the noisy world of social media.

1. Craft a Kickass Headline

If Copyblogger is to be believed, at least half of your time should be spent writing the headline. That’s because eight out of 10 people read headline copy, while only 2 out of 10 bother to read the rest.

Sounds absurd? Not really. Readers can only consume so many articles a day, so if they want to read one piece out of the hundreds on their newsfeed, they should be able to tell ? within 5 seconds flat ? whether it’s worth the read or not. In other words, a clickbait-y headline might not salvage a mediocre piece, but a ho-hum headline is a surefire way to get an excellent article bypassed.

Try to take a leaf out of BuzzFeed’s book, and craft headlines that push readers’ curiosity buttons. You can also refer to Buffer’s comprehensive guide on headline formulas, or cheat your way to headline ideas via title generators like those from Hubspot, Portent and WebpageFX.

2. Always Include at Least One Image

A wise man once said: “One grain of rice can tip the scale. One image may be the difference between victory and defeat.” Mulan references aside, it’s amazing what one photo can do to your social share count!

In a study by OkDork, posts with images are twice as likely to get shared on Facebook and Twitter as those without. Moreover, posts that utilized Open Graph meta tags are three times as likely to get shared, since these tags allow you to customize the thumbnails pulled by social networking sites. 3. Choose Your Images Carefully

It’s not enough to just have an image, though. According to Hubspot, your image has to be:

  • Relevant. If a post is about a recipe, you can’t use an image of a Star Wars action figure ? unless maybe your headline is ?5 Ways to Make Lasagna Luke Skywalker Will Love.?
  • Compelling. When you have a headline like “10 Ways to Escape the Corporate Rat Race,” it’s better to use a photo of a man in a suit rushing past the finish line than an oh-so-common image of an office worker falling asleep over a desk.
  • High Quality. Are you a crap photographer? Source your images from people who aren?t. Trust me, you?re better off that way. There are literally thousands of free, high quality images out there and even tools to search for them.
  • Optimized for All Screen Sizes. A plugin like Hammy will take care of this for you.
  • Within Your Rights to Use. This one can be tricky. If you’re not careful, you could end up like these copywriters who paid $4,000 for a $10 photo. It’s best to search for Creative Commons images, which require attribution, or Creative Commons Zero images, which do not.

The more your posts’ images meet these criteria, the better.

4. Overlay Text on Your Images

You know those photos of quotable quotes superimposed over beautiful scenery? Those are great examples of overlaying text on images. They work pretty well as marketing materials, since people are naturally drawn to visuals. Also, they’re quite easy to make, thanks to the following tools:

  • Canva. With its user-friendly features like templates, custom image sizes, and drag-and-drop interface, Canva is perfect for those who don’t have the resources to hire a professional designer.
  • Pablo. Here, all you have to do is write your text, pick a background image and you’re good to go. Other customization options, such as font size and formatting, are available.
  • PicMonkey. If basic features are all you need, PicMonkey is available for free. Edit, crop, and perform basic modifications to images right in your browser.
  • ReciteThis. Like PicMonkey, ReciteThis is a free, Web-based tool. Its intuitive interface ensures that you’ll know your way around it in no time.

Whether you want to spruce up photos or add a more creative twist to your marketing campaign, overlaying text on images is a great technique to learn. For more tips on this, check out these 19 inspiring examples.

5. Tailor Image Sizes for Different Social Networks

Yes, size matters too. For example, a tall image works better for Pinterest than for Facebook, while the opposite is true of wide images. Buffer has a great post on ideal image sizes for social media posts, though the general rules are as follows:

  • Facebook: 1,200 x 628 pixels
  • Twitter: 1,024 x 512 pixels
  • Google+: 800 x 1,200 pixels
  • LinkedIn: 800 x 800 pixels
  • Pinterest: 735 x 1,102 pixels
  • Instagram: 1,200 x 1,200 pixels

If you take these sizes into account, you will fill up the optimum amount of screen real estate on your social platforms, without your images getting distorted or cut off.

6. Use the Power of Suggestion

No, we’re not talking about Jedi mind tricks. We’re talking about giving your audience big, flashing signs that say: “Hey, can you do this for me? It’s free!” Make it easy to tweet quotes from your article with Click to Tweet, or appeal to your readers? inner pinner with a readily-accessible Pin It button overlaid on your images.

7. Appeal to Your Audience with Colors

People respond subconsciously to colors. For example, yellow is often associated with optimism, while red is associated with passion. If you know how to mix and balance them as detailed here, you’ll be able to avoid school uniform syndrome; that is, the presence of complementary but boring colors.

Be careful not to oversimplify the meaning of colors, though. To quote marketing strategist Gregory Ciotti: “?Elements such as personal preferences, experiences, upbringing, cultural differences, context, etc., often muddy the effect individual colors have on us. So the idea that colors such as yellow or purple are able to invoke some sort of hyper-specific emotion is about as accurate as your standard Tarot card reading.” Couldn’t say it better myself.

Closing Thoughts

These rules aren’t set in stone. Experiment with these one at a time, and see which one of them works best. The important thing is to try, analyze and implement the ones that resonate the most with your specific audience. Also, remember to keep learning new things, so you’ll always be one of the forerunners in your industry.

What Is Pinterest?

If you haven’t checked Pinterest yet, well, you should. Not necessarily because you like the stuff going on there, but because the site managed to go viral after we thought we had seen it all in social networks, so they did something right.

First of all what is Pinterest? It’s a social networking and social publishing site based on photos. Something like Tumblr meets Flickr.

The idea is that each user has a theme board where he can pin stuff he likes from around the web, and everything is represented through images. The visual appeal of the site is what seems to have triggered its immense growth (it’s the fastest site in history to reach 10 million unique visitors per month).

Here’s how Wikipedia describes it:

Users of Pinterest curate themed boards, populating them with media found online using the “Pin It” button, or uploaded from their computers.[15] Each such item of media is known as a “pin”, and can be a picture, a video, a discussion, or a product. Pins can be grouped into “boards”, which are sets of pins focused on a specific topic. Pinterest can be accessed by adding the “pin it” button to the desktop bookmark bar, “follow me” and “pin it” buttons added to personal website or blog pages, and the Pinterest iPhone application available through the App Store.

To register for Pinterest, new users must receive an invitation from a friend already registered on Pinterest or request an invitation directly from the Pinterest website. The registration process currently requires users to link their Pinterest account to their Facebook or Twitter account. Users choosing to log in via Facebook must be using (or opt in to) Facebook’s “Timeline” format.

Why should you care?

First and foremost because the people who created the site got many things right to make it such a hit, so there’s a lot to learn there.

Even if you are not planning to launch a social network anytime soon you can still use Pinterest to promote your sites, to expand your network and even to make some money directly with it.

In fact there are some people claiming to be making over $1000 daily from Pinterest already. Sure, many are spammers, like this one, but I suspect there are many white hat people taking benefit from the phenomenon as well, so check it out.
